How to encode AVC video for better compability with future hardware players?

I'm using x264. What container and audio format I should use? MP4 or AVI? AAC or AC3 or MP2?

I understand I can't encode 100% compatible video right now, but I want to have better chances future players can play my video.

mp4 = container for video(h264)+audio(aac).
use "main profile".
