View Full Version : x264 with 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 colorspace?

I've read that x264 supports the AVC high profile, which includes operations in 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 colorspace. Unfortunately I don't succeed, because MeGUI always wants to have 4:2:0 (YV12) as input, even if I set the encoder's AVC profile to "High". Tested with x264 core:45 svn-487 and MeGUI 0.2.3.2117.
What's wrong?

4:2:2 and 4:4:4 is not implemented yet and probably won't be in the near future.

none that I can think of. the beta ateme one does I think. (not available to the public)

the reference encoder propably supports it, but than again there is the question what decoder handles those streams :D

I bet not even HD-DVD or Blu-ray make use of the higher YUV colour spaces :eek:.

H.264 High Profile does NOT include support for 4:2:2, 4:4:4, or bit depths higher than 8-bit (similar to MPEG-2 MP@HL).

AviSynth v2.6 supports 4:4:4 too (most filters are already working in that format)!

But, as far I know, AviSynth 2.6 doesn't exist? Latest version is 2.57 alpha 2.

It exists, but not as an official release. It's not ready for prime time yet :)

4:4:4 is pretty much only used by studios internally. Think about it, we use similar colorspaces in AviSynth all the time for filters, they use it for similar purposes - perhaps also for special effects?
Anyway, when they've got the final movie or whatever assembled, they convert everything back to YV12, because everything uses YV12 (everything that's useful as a distribution format) - like MPEG-2 for DVDs, DVB-T, DVB-S, and DVB-whatever for cable, and now MPEG-4 AVC for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.
I've always wondered actually, what is the purpose of these higher bit colorspaces if you're going to output YV12 eventually??
