there is Fullscreen 4:3 and Widescreen 16:9 SeeMoreDigital sure the're all Fullscreen if playbacked on a Standalone but it's Hollywoods nameing for it :P

What I was trying to establish is what Fateh2002 thinks they are?

Personally speaking I hate "full-screen" DVD's and wish they had never been conceived. In my opinion, there only purpose is to satisfy people who are clinging onto an 4:3 shaped world...

In-fact I'm quite shocked at how manufacturers are still getting away with making 4:3 display screens, which in-turn encourages the sale of full-screen DVD even more :devil:


Please let these awful transfers die....

Do you know for a fact that the "Trilogy - Extended Edition" was ever released in fullscreen format?

May I ask why you are limiting yourself to this format? You can always set your standalone DVD player to letterbox format, if need be...

It isn't exactly that way. Usually fullscreen versions have more vertical information than widescreen releases which on the other hand have more horizontal content. Though most films are made to fit the screen estate provided by the silver screen. So that extra vertical content isn't exactly what the director had in mind.

As far as I can tell -- by searching at both imdb.com and at newline.com, New Line has not produced a pan & scan version of the extended editions.

For full screen DVDs, you'll have to use the theatrical cuts.

You're describing a technique called 'open matte'. The word 'usually' is incorrect. Most 2.35:1 movies nowadays are actually filmed anamorphically, so that there really is no more vertical information than that. Very few directors still use open matte.

yep, anamorphic means keeping as much vertical and horizontal information as can fit on a DVD.

however, DVD can't do 2.35:1 anamorphic - you'll get 2.35 letterboxed onto a 16:9 anamorphic screen.

contrasted with a pan-scan version, you may get more lines of active picture area, but you're missing so so much of the actual movie that it's not at all worth it. almost half of the movie, and the composition is messed up. nobody would crop an ansell adams print, so why crop a peter jackson print? :)

Saw a movie documentary (actually it was 2, because there was so much to say they couldn't fit it in 1 movie) about it some time ago. I particular like when "pan&scanners" completely make new scenes! Like, in a scene a guy was staring at a matchstick flame (close up, you could see his eyes on one side of the scree, the flame on the other). So, they scanned his face -> cut -> focus the flame -> cut -> back to his face...
