new revisions break compilation for that platform? why bother with it anyway... power pc has no future, especially since apple switched to intel.

Not to mention PS3 (which will have Linux support), Cell is based from a PPC architecture isnt it?

will we see you *encoding* on those consoles? I'd have expected they would be used mostly for playback.

"why bother with it anyway" <- me for example (G4). Plus a Quad-G5 still beats every Intel based system.

i may be dense, but if you had a PS3 that was 'open', wouldnt it beat anything else we have at the mo for encoding? (excluding the people with 8 dualcore opterons etc :p )

I'm pretty sure that that change log comes up periodically, so I think when other people commit changes they undo that one change, so he has to redo it again and again, from time to time. I think that's why he's pissed.

There are plenty of people still using PowerPC. Just because Apple has switched to Intel doesn't mean that all of the processors in Macs have suddenly become Intel chips. If money grew on trees, I'd have a shiny new Intel Mac when the Pro lines come out. Until then, I'm using my dusty old Dual 2.0ghz G5 for a few more years.

I'll have some of whatever you're smoking :)
It looks like the Cell would suck pretty hard at encoding. (http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/ubb.x/a/tpc/f/174096756/m/398003679631)
The specs and design are not optimized for that kind of math.

Cell is no that "miracle" everyone believe it is.
It's just a different approach from the traditional schemes. It has it's own advantages and flaws, faster for some kind of work and slower other stuff.
in the era of decentralized computing (CPU, GPU, VPU and PPU), Cell seems to be an attempt to re-centralize everything in a single unit...
