AVI and Xvid Questions

I plan on backing up some of my DVD's to Xvid, and I am wondering how I should go about it. I plan to use Xvid VFW, because xvid_encraw doesn't support all the features of the VFW interface. I plan to demux the video from the AVI and mux into MP4. What should I use to demux the video from the AVI? Should I use packed bitstream in the encoder, or leave it off?

Just use virtualdub and yamb. mp4box will remove packed bitstream (but you might as well use it, you won't lose that frame or two at the end) and completely reparse the avi xvid as a proper mp4.

Still, squid_80's encraw should have all the current features, are you sure something's missing?

I downloaded the latest one form the xvid_encraw thread in the Xvid forum. It worked fine, others in the past haven't. The problem is the output quality was horrible. I used the same settings as I did in VFW, but the quality was far worse.

Thanks for the help though, I will follow your advice using the VFW interface.

for remuxing xvid from avi to a correct mp4 you only need mp4box. it can read those avis directly, unpack them (if packed) and store it in mp4 fine
