I have a Hauppauge 150 MCE capture card. I would like to capture some TV programs and store them on my hard drive. What is the best way to do this? Should I capture at the max resolution (5.9 GB/hR) then convert to xVID? What does everyone suggest? Also, What do you guys recommend for cutting out the commericals of the mpeg video? Thanks

If you plan on converting to xvid, then yes, capture at the highest bitrate you can - 15Mbit/sec 720 x 480 (576). The card can output higher bitrates, but - it can't really take advantage of them; rates above 15Mbit/sec exceed the MP@ML profile; the card will sometimes just stop outputting data.

As far as editing goes, free = project-x/pvastrumento + cuttermaran/mpeg2schnitt, pay = videoredo.

If you are after an easy command line capture tool - gbrecord - www.shspvr.com in the forum, 3rd party capture software for the 150.
