Here in the UK I have 8mb/448kbps ADSL, 50gb d/l quota during peak times, unlimited d/l during off-peak (midnight to 8am), no shaping. The price is 43 Euros which is a bit higher than other isp's, but the service is reliable and I appreciate the lack of shaping.

Here you have at max. two options for broadband, where both are available:

a) Recently privatised ex-State-monopoly new private-monopoly ADSL.
For $20/month : 512k/128k 3GB limited
For $33/month : 512k/128k 6GB limited or 256k/64k unlimited
For $66/month : 512k/128k unlimited.

b) Private-oligopoly Cable (each provider provides to a different zone, no competition)
For $27/month : 128k/32k unlimited (YES 128k is an option !!)
For $36/month : 256k/64k unlimited *this is what I'm on*
For $73/month : 512k/128k unlimited

Under no circumstances will you find more than one provider for each connection type. It's either adsl or cable for you.

Note the insane prices for pathetic speeds. i'm not even quoting the 1024k options as they are in 3 digits. Until 1 year ago, there was even a speed offering of 64k/16k for cable! can you imagine that? cable technology at dial-up speeds.

To top it off, all of this is hooked up to a insufficient backbone where pings to outside the country are always 3 digits, no matter how close, and inter-country pings are also erratic. Huge rip-off since the 6 years broadband was introduced. Only consolation is no P2P related court action has occured yet...

i think the upload speed is even worse than dialup (i have dialup, it goes 3 kb sec and your upload speed equals 2 kb sec)

Dialup isn't that bad as people portray it though. You can surf the internet just fine, but downloads over about 10 mb will make it seem like torture. But I leave my computer and internet on overnight and I can download about 100 MB and upload 50 MB.

@castellanos: the problem is now resolved, but perhaps you didn't read my entire post.. it was so bad I couldn't even go looking for news.. it would take minutes for a webpage to load. My posts to this board during that time were done from the office where I had a properly working Internet access.

So how many traffic may I produce until I might face my ISP using the emergency brake? I rarely use torrents but capture a shoutcast stream in the background for a couple of weeks sometimes, I don't think that I've ever exceeded 20 GB.

My old provider offered me 100 Euro for leaving (link removed) (average traffic was ~145GB per month). Well, I took the money and switched to a different provider, now i have 3x the bw and pay 25% less than before... XD

145GB a month? Can you tell what that entailed (make it PM if it's anything iffy).. I've always wondered how you can go so high without just downloading for traffic's sake. That is unless you download a whole lot of DVD-R rips but I've always considered that as a waste of time considering that XviD rips look just as good and that MPEG-4 capable DVD players are dirt cheap. Except for downloading half the MSDN archive, I doubt I could even dare to go up to a 3 digit GB value. But MSDN also means a lot of CTPs and those are not small these days.

No need for a PM! Quick summary of 2005: Transferring lossless video, pr0n, game mods/levels/expansions, pr0n, fansubs, game demos, transferring more lossless video, pr0n, tons of 5-30MB JPEGs, more fansubs, HD trailers, pr0n, uploading 4GB samples for beta tests, even more pr0n, but no DVD rips... neither DVD-R nor XviD! If Id just download for traffic's sake Id be at 500GB with the new line now, but Im not... Its just that I downloaded everything I wasnt able to get via 56k back then!

As of 1 min. ago, the last news was 4/1, nothing since and I check just about every day.

Now I just wasted 30 seconds checking all servers - they are all up-to-date. What has most likely happened is that your either have a proxy or your ISP has a hidden one, and due to the lack of updates, the server stopped loading the latest page so what you get to see is a cached old copy.
And I already have 4 items for the next news issue..

Or, if you are using IE (argh), I remember something with the Temporary Files which would make it reload a older cached version already stored on your computer. Just a suggestion.

In here (europe), our ts's are 264 (some at least). ;)

but, ok, I admit it, those sizes are for the "obsolete" mpeg2 ones.
And you're absolutely right, bigger isn't always better. And I prefer the h264 encodes too.

What annoys me most these days is the number of people uploading upscaled DVD content trying to pass it as HD. geee.

What if the "somebody" is you? I mean, not all cappers know how to edit/filter/encode... Why should you get a crappy processed WMV9 raw if you can get the 4GB original instead, heh!?

But then again, even the MPAA can't get it right if you look at the botched first HD DVD release and in2movies.. that just makes it so more important to have sites where you can learn how to encode movies properly.
