You could try some of the ideas discussed in this thread:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=577783#post577783]Mono to Stereo to 5.1
I experimented a bit recently and found that the convolution plugin Convo Boy (www.elevayta.com) loaded with some of the free Lexicon 960 impulses available at www.noisevault.com create really nice stereo sound field that when then fed into the V.I Stereo to Surround plugin, give a really convincing 5.1 sound field. You have to play around with the levels, but once you strike the right balance, the result is great! The key is to use just a little reverb. When working with this reverb, it's very easy to add too much. Try adding just a bit and then leaving it for a couple of hours or until the next day before burning your final project to disc. If you go back and it sounds too "muddy" or buried in reverb, then add less! If you want a lot more separation than this gives, you can also add the excellent Wide Boy plugin (again www.elevayta.com). Run this on V.I's fL and fR outputs because if you add it before running through V.I (or 99% of any other stereo to surround methods that exist) you'll end up with too much information in the surround speakers.
Experiment and have fun with it! Then come back and tell us how it worked out.
Regards,
Steve.
