Video resolution HD DVD compliants in VC1 and H264 (MPEG4 part 10, High Profil) but in "Standard Content".
In "Advanced Content" or "iHD" it's not all compliants (because there are Picture In Picture,
Audio mix with 2 audio stream, web link, SMIL,...).

And some new resolutions will available (see some interview from CES2006) 1920x1080 29.97p and 60p.

- For VC1 it's AP@L3 (advance profile level3) (But 1920x1080 29.97p or 30p or 60p it's AP@L4 ????).
Encoding bitrate 12Mbps (recommanded by encoding hardware manufacture)
16Mbps (recommanded by Microsoft for Studio Authoring, very high ??????)

So with this bitrate, we need HD DVD disc to put a movie 90min.


- For H264 it's High Profil
The minimum bitrate of HD DVD is 2.5Mbps (I see a test in H264 HD DVD compliant at 1920x1080 at 2.5 Mbps
on PC, it's very nice...)
8 Mbps is recommanded (by me :D I have Samsung LE32M51 LCD and a shuttle SB61G at 3.4GHz...)

So with this bitrate, no problem to do a HD DVD Video on DVD disc (but it's not possible to do a HD DVD Video
and DVD Video on same DVD disc because HD DVD use UDF 2.5 and some HD DVD player will not play it :( )

wait they recommend only 2.5Mbps for 1920x1080????????? That sounds a bit off. Considering most current DVD's are at around 4-5mbps and their only 720x480. Even with VC-1 and h264 2.5Mbps won't look nice IMHO.

In recent years DivX have provided us with some 1280x720 (921,600 pixels) MPEG-4 A/SP encodes. And while these look pretty good at around 3500-4000Kbps, and might even look better when encoded in MPEG-4 AVC at 2500Kbps, it's a bit of a stretch to suggest an encode with more than twice the quantity of pixels (ie: 2,073,600 pixels) will pass as being "high-definition"

In HD DVD specification for "Standard Content", the minimum bitrate is 2.5Mbps for VIDEO STREAM
(no video and audio stream) in H264 or VC1.

If you use VBR encoding tool, you must put 2.5Mbps at minimum bitrate
(I said that I see a video in H264 at 2.5Mbps and it was nice, I don't said that action scene...)

I see 1280x720 is listed as supporting: 59.97i, 59.94p, 50i, 50p and 960x720 is listed as supporting: 29.97i/p, 25i/p... Surely both should support identical feild/frame rates?!

from the "DIGITAL VIDEO AND HDTV ALGORITHMS AND INTERFACES" (Charles Poynton), the systems are marked like:
1080p60, 1080p59.94, ...., 1080i29.97, ......, 1080p25, ect
so iam pretty sure that there is no 29.97i either.

That list is seems a little dated....... As there's no mention of any of the proposed European field/frame rates for (960)1280x720.

I'm guessing the 2.5 Mbps is the minimum in a VBR sense for 1080p. They're not saying that's gonna be the ABR bitrate, as that would be senile methinks.

It looks to be "Engrish" for "interlace ratio"; 2 fields for every frame in interlaced material (2:1), and a 1:1 ratio for progressive video.

This does look to be a pretty old chart, as 1920x1035 looks suspiciously like a MuSE --> ISDB conversion. Japan is to drop MuSE completely by 2007(?) or thereabouts.
