View Full Version : Attempting to load x264 encoded video to VirtualDubMod

I have been encoding video using the x264 codec but when I attempt to load the finished project back into VirtualDubMod it says it needs a Video for Windows (vfw) codec to decompress. I have installed this codec some time ago but have no idea how to integrate it into VDub. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could not locate decompressor for 'H264'

x264 is a compressor only. To decompress its video you will need ffdshow (look on sourceforge.net). Once you install ffdshow you will need to go to the vfw codec configuration and set h264 to "libavcodec".

I have no idea where the vfw codec config is!?! It's not important however because it opens a direct stream copy and you are able to mux audio.

its recommended to use x264 not in .avi but in .mp4 for various reason

for easy remuxing from .avi to .mp4 you can use my avi2mp4 tool:

I actually don't think this method will work with files encoded usig x264 cli. VDM will report something with "broken references" and you can't do even direct stream copy. Probably has something to do with the way B frames are stored.

EDIT: I read more carefully and it seems that you used VDM also for encoding. But as bond suggested, his method is the best.

you go to www.free-codecs.com ,download and run K-lite codec pack . In your start menu , there a shortcut which lead to x264vwf

Argh. To all users reading this. Do a search of this forum for "codec pack".

I prefer "K-kite codec pack" to others . Once time , I read a decription of K-lite . It says that K-lite is a codec pack which has almost codec . So I think that if you instaled it , you willn't need any codec :D

Yes and the k-lite codec back is notorious for screwing up peoples computers as evidenced by the numerous posts of people asking for help after these codec packs have screwed up their systems. Secondly, that's not going to help the person anyway and will most likely screw things up.

oh ! I dont' know your words . Do you mean that k-lite codec pack isn't a good thing ? I always uses it and there's still no problem . Perhaps you choose filter for some codec from FFdshow . You should open "FFdshow" and un-check filter for codec :D
If I need a codec , I must install that codec . Oh ! There are so so many codecs . I think that this is reason why codec pack are exist

Wrong.. if you just need a decoder you don't need to install the encoder too..

I don't have any problems because I don't install codec packs. But if you do a search on this forum for codec pack and you will see the vast, vast amounts of posts of such packs screwing up people's computers (sometimes to the point of having to format and reinstall the OS).

If I need a codec , I must install that codec . Oh ! There are so so many codecs . I think that this is reason why codec pack are exist

That's what ffdshow is for. No need to install OS corrupting codec packs.

At first time , I'm also in trouble with k-lite such as : not audio , I didn't know why all files have no audio , speaker has no word .Oh ! :D . Then I found-that AC3 filter cause this problem . I chose "Wave ..." instead of "Direct...." :D
Since that moment which I killed the problem , I still have no problem with K-lite pack .
Ok ! FFdshow can decompress many codecs but it dont' seem to
be able to compress any codecs .
Yes ! It's only a "multi-decoder" . If you don't like any decoders , you can uncheck these decoders when you're installing K-lite codec pack :D
Do you know the way which codec pack screw up computer ,for more detail ? I want to know it . Maybe I help you ?

That's great but many many other people have had tons of problems due to that codec pack.

Then you haven't looked hard enough because it is able to do that.

Or you can just not install codec packs and only install what you need.

Okay as I said before I don't have that problem because I don't install codec packs. As I said, if you do a search for codec pack you will see a ton of posts where many users have had problems where codec packs have completely screwed up their playback or corrupted their systems. This is why codec packs are not recommended on this forum due to having to deal with posts where codec packs have screwed things up over and over.

oh ! FFdshow is quite good ! :D . I think that K-lite codec pack is still a good resolution because It have many codecs . Yes ! All codec in one :D
Ok ! if you dont like k-lite codec pack , go to http://x264.nl

I have this same problem, I tried everything and it still won't work. Even though x264 is enabled in vfw, virtualdubmod still gives me the exact same error. I tried it with many different codecs, but it still didn't work.

Read how I have h264 decoding support in vdub (and every other vfw app). Just enabling decoding in ffdshow-vfw did not work for me at all. Adding vidc.h264 = ff_vfw.dll to my registry works perfectly

As I know that, the ffdshow version only decodes VFW version of x264
If you're using the CLI version, I think it is not supported
