I'll post more information in this thread next week on the codec and our plans for it.

since you guys already have SMP3 of TCPMP i'll send you the .plg to compare against other codecs till the DS filter is done in a few weeks. Toff is on vacation for another 2 weeks.

VLC has very fast (fastest?) ASP decoder. It will be usefull to compare with it.

for my xvid/divx stuff i've always used ffdshow for decoding. i suppose we can compare with some of the trailers available on divx.com

Which is still way higher than you other guys are reporting....

Be seeing you!

Athlon XP 3000+, Thank You For Smoking Trailer played with VLC 0.8.5-test1, yes it was running even though it may not look like it ... just sad the GUIs of those players suck major ass and subtitle renderers are major crap too.

and for dshow i used timecodec from haali

ffdshow
User: 20s, kernel: 0s, total: 21s, real: 72s, fps: 166.9, dfps: 49.4 (VMR7 - dfps ruined by vsync)
User: 21s, kernel: 0s, total: 21s, real: 29s, fps: 165.6, dfps: 119.3 (Null Renderer)

Now CoreASP should provide some more fps for dshow, would be nice to know how you can do proper VLC benchmarks ...

Nice post CruNcher.... that is an older version of CoreASP. I'll work on getting you the latest one to test as it has alot of changes.

Well... I've had a little more success...

I've been beta testing some UPnP media serving software my Zensonic Z500, and after turning it off completely and playing the "Thank You For Smoking" source trailer again in GraphEdit, my pathetic (one core) 2.8GHz P4 seems to be a lot happier ;)

I also re-muxed the source into MP4 (using YAMB), to see how much difference in load there would be to the AVI...

Anyway, here are the results: -

Speaking of the thank you for smoking trailer, does anyone know the name of the song in it? Also, is coreASP going to be OSS or proprietary like coreAVC?

It's incorrect to say that coreavc is proprietary, because mpeg4 is an open standard. It's more accurate to say that coreavc is closed source. :)

We would like to OS CoreASP... and the discussion inhouse atm is too eventually do so. But there are several good reasons why we should not... so it TBD for now.

If i can say my opinion, i would like suggest to concentrate the comparison instead of the "speed", rather on the "quality" of the decoding, that nowadays is very different from decoder to decoder. Speed is not such a matter in an ASP context.
In my experience the best quality output (without deblock) is NeroDigital decoder. Follow the Xvid decoder, and last FFDShow (very much dirt and problem with color conversion).
Xvid decoder is close to NeroDigital in terms of quality, but Nero has an upgear (pheraps best chroma converting routine?).

videomixer9
19th April 2006, 15:50
I think Nero always outputs RGB colorspace converted by it's own software, xvid outputs YUY2 for me per default and ffdshow YV12. Some graphics cards also got problems with YV12 processing ... however I generally agree that quality of libavcodec used with ffdshow output is not always what I'd call the best.

3ngel
19th April 2006, 16:07
The comparison i made was done forcing the 3 decoders to RGB32 (Nero outputs by default to RGB32).

Like CoreAVC we will have configurable colorspace output for CoreASP.

Sorry its been a while guys... we have been busy with CoreAVC and the new CoreAAC v2.0. We have set the CoreASP launch back till after CorePlayer Mobile 1.0 is released next month.

I'll pick up this thread in a few weeks on the requested features.... and by then we will have post processing added.

Admittedly, not many people generate encodes with it but it's inclusion would certainly round-off/complete the decoders funtionality....

I hope, you'll focus on the quality decoding in comparison with NeroDigital decoder one. A super speed asp decoder it's frankly quite useless nowadays. Better a super-quality super-speed decoder :)
PS: and what about a super-speed CoreMpeg2? THAT would be really useful 'cause of all the HD mpeg2 SatTV :p

CoreASP is 'alot' of work for Directshow. ATM its a one man job in putting all the components together from our CorePlayer Framework into the filter.

We are targeting a late August / September release for this.

SMD... I have added a 'pure interlaced' on the todo list.

np... funny thing is CoreASP is turning out to 3X more work then CoreAVC was for us... who knew? ;-) .... well I should say Toff knows ;-)

SeeMoreDigital

Indeed...

The ongoing development of MPEG-4 Part-10 decoding, has without doubt revealed there was much outstanding work that needed to be done with MPEG-4 Part-2 decoding!

Looking back, it's only been a couple of years or so ago since anamorphic signalling detection was added to MPEG-4 Part-2 decoders - and what a struggle that was get that included :scared:

So yes.... there must be a few more outstanding decoder implementations.... In some respects, you're having to start from scratch!

I'm not too surprised. There are so many MPE4-ASP derivitives on the scene with varying differences to account for.

MPEG-4 AVC is fairly new and all derivitives seem to be done closely to the book, including X264.

bump again 8)

iv got a low spec intel 500mhz laptop that struggles with greater than 3mbit/s mpeg2 ts (BBC mux Dr Who), so id like to see a faster mpeg2 decoder codec for that one day LOL.

ohh and bond and i want to know were to get the CoreASP codec http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=73998&page=2

it doesnt seem to be on the site or at least a direct link to it that can be used without the password ?.

ps:
BetaBoy , did you see these PPC boards BTW?, BBRV might like to give you access to a system for you to compile your family of apps on perhaps (tell him who you are etc)

Use MPlayer and experiment with -vc mpeg12, -vc ffmpeg12, -dr, -noslices, -lavdopts=fast and other parameters. You could also compile a custom build of MPlayer specifically for your CPU, although that is easier on Linux than on Windows. I doubt the Core folks could ever write a DS MPEG-2 decoder that is faster than libmpeg2 or libavcodec used through MPlayer, especially for an old CPU like yours.

-vo xvmc,xv -vc ffmpeg12mc, should be faster if supported by the video card.
