your resolution......177 isn't even even much less mod 16. so it's probably not compatible
chipzoller
6th April 2006, 05:06
Oh I know it's compatible, because I encoded this file at that resolution for my iPod. The AR is 1.81 or 1.82, and it plays fine on the iPod (not working with RealAnime) but has audio/video sync issues. This is why I wanted to try it with RealAnime and see if the same sync issues were present. Can you choose to encode just MPEG4 instead of x264? I think x264 still has a bit of a problem with iPods.
Wait...177??? How the hell did that get in there. Should be 176.
OK, that must have been it...encoding now. Will see if the sync issues disappears.
Thank you for pointing this out.
Sirber
6th April 2006, 12:16
Why did you ask "ChangeFPS(23.976)" if your source was it? THe FPS option should only be used if you want 12 or 15FPS.
chipzoller
6th April 2006, 14:19
I asked for ChangeFPS in case I had the sync issue again...I just wanted to see if it made a difference, which it didn't. Now my audio is in sync, but the video (even though I used the iPod profile) does not play in my iPod.
Sirber
6th April 2006, 14:24
Well, the iPod profil is just a help. I don,t validate the filtering you ask. What are your settings?
chipzoller
6th April 2006, 14:28
x264 (no MPEG-4?)
Medium quality
AAC 128kbps
1pass
700 bitrate
filtering +1 (enabled)
resize to 320x176 (enabled)
This enough?
Sirber
6th April 2006, 14:56
x264 is MPEG-4 AVC
XviD is MPEG-4 ASP
The bitrate is a bit high, audio and video. iPod can't go above 768kbps, and 700kbps average is bound to go over that limit.
Also, why using DVDRip bitrates for a 2.5 inch screen? ;)
Did you try the defaults settings?
Did you know, less HDD reading, more battery?
chipzoller
6th April 2006, 15:07
x264 is MPEG-4 AVC
XviD is MPEG-4 ASP
Which do you recommend?
iPod can't go above 768kbps
This is a physical limitation? Strange because I've encoded via MeGUI at 800kbps CBR and had no problems, but not using Xvid or x264.
Did you try the defaults settings?
Is there a way to load defaults? I'm doing another test and without changing anything, the bitrate was like 176 for a 2+hour movie. This new test I'm using Xvid at 630kbps and 96kbps audio.
Would you consider adding a 112kbps option in the AAC encoder?
I get this error when changing encoding to Xvid:

Sirber
6th April 2006, 15:46
xvid bug will be resolved in RealAnime 4.2.0. Best use x264 until it's released.
The bitrate limitation is hardware.
about AAC @112kbps, no since I use 64kbps ;)
to reload the defaults, just change the profil to iPod again.
Eretria-chan
6th April 2006, 18:03
100+ for AAC is overkill, no? Unless you have 5.1 or greater sound... It sounds perfectly find to me at 48 kbps!
700 kbps at such low resolution is absolutely overkill too, isn't it? Smaller screen means you probably can't spot so many artifacts...
Sirber
6th April 2006, 18:05
iPod only support AAC LC. So 64kbps is the minimum barable.
Eretria-chan
6th April 2006, 18:28
Well, still, 100+ is still overkill, is it not? I mean, I have listened to mp3 @ 56 kbps, and it sounded alright. It was few times that I could tell the quality was lower than that of higher.
chipzoller
6th April 2006, 18:41
Well, I haven't done extensive testing with x264, but using FFMpeg and encoding MPEG4 at around 576 you still have macroblocking problems especially in dark scenes, and it become VERY apparent in high-motion scenes.
I have listened to mp3 @ 56 kbps, and it sounded alright
Then you must have a hearing problem or were ripping recordings transferred from wax cylinders :)
I have very sensitive ears and hearing, perhaps because I'm a pianist, but I can tell the difference between 128 and 112, with some difficulty but still. I'm not too discriminating for my iPod because it's not exactly the same desired quality as a home theatre operation. I'm doing a test encode @ 96 and will see how it turns out.
My big issue is out of sync video from my AVIs that have sources of 23.976. I have yet to encode one of these where the sound is NOT out of sync to the video when played back on my iPod video.
Sirber, do you have an iPod or have look at some of your encodes on an iPod? If so, what bitrate do you find works (and what mode) best?
Generally, my AVIs that I'm converting are around 700-710MB (encoded with DivX 4.x) and I'm finding that they're coming out anywhere from 630-670 when encoded for the iPod.
Sirber
6th April 2006, 18:49
I have a 30GB iPod video and realanime's defaults are #1 for me.
It's more suited for cartoon/anime, but works ain't too bad on real movies. File size is 120-160MB depending on how long is your movie.
note that the iPod dosen't inloop (filter) chroma, so you can get plain-color squares.
Eretria-chan
6th April 2006, 18:50
Then you must have a hearing problem or were ripping recordings transferred from wax cylinders :)
Kids these days, I tell you! They are nothing but trouble :p
No actually, they sounded ok, if you encoded with windows encoder (which was the only I had). It encoded with join stereo as I know, also.
As for the video, either you must have very good eyes or be very picky. The default 3xx bitrate is okay for PC encodes, so it sure would be good enough for ipod! Especially concerning how much smaller the screen is.
Sirber
6th April 2006, 18:53
iPod default is 136kbps (+ 64kbps audio) so final it's 200kbps. I keep my music at 128kbps (AAC) but for movies 64 is enough.
chipzoller
6th April 2006, 19:17
realanime's defaults are #1 for me
Would the default be what you mentioned, 136 for video? Well, I'll try the defaults and see what it comes out looking like.
But yes, I suppose I have good eye sight. I don't have a visual impairment if that's what you mean :)
From the things I've read about the iPod video (and I'm kind-of new to all this), x264 support is experimental? Is this right, or is x264 less stable than MP4 standard? I know the codec itself is rather new and still under heavy development.
Eretria-chan
6th April 2006, 19:21
But yes, I suppose I have good eye sight. I don't have a visual impairment if that's what you mean :)
No, I mean you are picky about quality :) If there is the slightest glitch, you complain :sly: You are the ... picky type :p
Sirber
6th April 2006, 19:22
x264 is H264 and is part of MP4 standart.
Also, if you watch your iPod video on PC, you will see it's pretty ugly, but if you play it on your iPod it's #1.

chipzoller
6th April 2006, 19:37
Nah it's cool.
I guess I am kind-of picky, but am much less so when it comes to iPod video. Just from all my tests using FFMpeg, setting a CBR of 576 (not using x264, though) I still get really crappy quality especially in high-motion scenes. I haven't yet experimented with lower bitrates so I should probably do that and see what kind of results I get.
Although, I DO want to be able to see my people on the screen and not just a string of 12 blocks put together that looks like i'm looking at someone through one of those wretched glass windows from the 1960's.
I have yet to encode a video with x264 that works on my iPod, so obviously I have much testing to do.
Sirber
6th April 2006, 19:56
x264 is mroe efficient than xvid/ffmpeg, so you get more for less bitrate.
chipzoller
6th April 2006, 19:59
So back to my question. What bitrate (video) would you recommend for a 2 hr. 10min. movie to be good quality?
Sirber
6th April 2006, 20:04
136kbps for 320x180 on non-anime content
186kbps for 320x240 on non-anime content
136kbps for 320x240 on anime content
output is VHS quality and is watchable nicely on my 20" TV using iPod video out :D
chipzoller
6th April 2006, 20:09
186kbps for 320x240 on non-anime content
WOW! I gotta check this out!
On another note, do you know the maximum resolution for iPod-compatible video?
Sirber

MPEG4 AVC: 320x240
MPEG4 ASP: 480x480
but the screen is 320x240, so above that is useless.

Ok my last test @ 600kbps and resized to 320x176 (so as to keep the 1.81 AR) didn't play at all on my iPod. I'm trying the bitrate you suggest (little bit higher...200kbps), but I just hope that because I left auto resize on, it will resize the video to a resolution within that AR.

auto keep the source ratio (if detected), else it crash :)
auto doesn't do mod16 rez yet

Is the iPod supposed to play H.264 content with firmware 1.1? Or do you need 1.1.1? I just did a small test encode with MeGUI converting a clip via x264 and it still didn't play on my iPod.
EDIT:
Ok, I used default settings only changing from 2 passes to 1 and get this error when starting the video encode process. Here's the whole log:

Open the AVS in a player and see what is the problem.
I have firmware 1.1 IIRC. As usual iTunes don't tell you what's wrong. Oh, do you use bframes? iPod don't handle them. Be sure it's set to 0 in adv. tab.
Also, I don't support competitors ;)

Oh...this is why
BicubicResize(320,177)
I guess your auto resolution isn't working on this on ;)
Guess I just need to change it to 320,176 ?

yeah. just set it the right way. "auto" is not optimal yet. Works well when the source is 640x480 though ;)
Also, please don't PM me saying that my app is screwing your encodes. Thanks.
I don't go in all that trouble helping you just for fun...
I respected you, as a human being. I hoped you do the same, but it seems I was dreaming. Mankind is evil!

Whoa...I was just kidding, ok. Besides, your app is quite good and I'm learning a lot with it!
Merci!
