Hiya guys. I'd like some tips on what settings I need to reencode some HD XviD's I have (960x544) to play on a DivX/XviD standalone player. I'll need to resize to 720x480 and set the aspect ratio to 16:9, right? I've got an LG LDA-531 which is an upconverting player (this is a Canadian model, similar to the LDA-511 sold in the US I think). Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I have an LG DX9900 and I usually stay on 640x360 when I need to do decent encode in 16:9. 704x400 works fine on my SAP also for high quality (and large dimension) encode. I wouldn't go higher.

Okay I figured out that I was resizing to the wrong resolution, and it was giving me black bars on the sides of my screen on my SAP. I realized that I needed to reduce the resolution by 75%, giving me 720x408. I am resizing with lanczos3 to maintain sharpness. The profile I'm using is Advanced Simple @ L5 and the H.263 matrix. Since I'm dropping the resolution, what should my target filesize be for a 2-pass encode? I was attempting to keep the same file size as the original but then I realized that I'm just wasting space. Any other tips for me? Thanks!

You ask for bitrate, without giving length, current size, quality, compressibility?
If they're on CD, there's no point in having any bitrate except one that fills the entire CD. If DVD, well, use as high as you want, especially if it's the only thing on there. There's a ton of bitrate calcs out there to help you decide.

However, an encode with a resolution of 960x544 equates to a total of 522,240 pixels, which exceeds a std-def chip-set limit of 414,720 pixels by 107,520 pixels...
Meaning, the only way you can play such an encode in hardware is with hi-def compatible "chip-sets" fitted within network capable DVD players/devices!

Sorry for the lack of info! Original file info:
video: 960x544, 42:10min, 1845kbps, 23.976f/s
audio: AC3 5 chan 384kbps
filesize: 690,486 KB (674 MB)
Since I am dropping resolution in order to maintain standalone compatability, what would you recommend for target bitrate and/or file size? Thanks!

Maybe you should download the regular 350MB HDTV rip instead?

celtic: I know, I was considering that. But I just wanted to get the most quality out of my standalone player, and since it's upconverting, having a higher resolution xvid does make a difference in terms of sharpness and detail. I did a comparison already and I can tell the difference with my eyes -- it's not dramatic but it's there. Anyway I'd still like any input you guys may have. Thanks.

Hi SMD,
So doing reverse arithmetic (headache is too much to try reverse maths :D )
414,720 / 720(width) gives= 576 height which happens to be std PAL dimensions.
When you say std chip set limit are you targetting the MTK or all the SAP chipsets?
Tks for clues, without maths if possible, my headache :)

do you know if these MTK SAP chips can accept a horizontal resolution greater than 720?Some time ago I tried some square pixel resolutions wider than 720 on my Pioneer DV-575A.... and no, they would not play.
I can't comment for other MediaTek chip-set based players though....

Probably you can approach the problem in a different way. Try an encode (at your desired new resolution) with a single pass constant quantizer. This is the best way to answer to the question "what is the best bitrate?". Try first at 3 then at 4 and maybe a third encode at quant 5. The one that suits you better in terms of quality/space is the way to go.

If you get to change copyright law in the US and EU to make downloads of TV eps legal, then we'll change rule 6 accordingly but until such point, such discussion is not permitted no matter how much I think TV eps are fair game to those that pay the TV reception fees.
