A couple of weeks ago, someone sent me an MPEG2 recording of a VHS I requested. I'm trying to come up with a suitable filterchain, but the source is nasty: strong dotcrawl, noise and lack of underlying detail make it very hard to do a proper encode of. So, I'm asking for a few good menŠ to help me out in this endeavor. Here's a sample clip:

(I'm presuming you're NOT talking about a commercial video)

You'd be better off asking that same someone to send you the source VHS - and doing the capturing yourself...

No way, just pay $20 and take it into someone who does it professionally. I gave up attemping vhs transfers years ago, unless the tape is in great condition, and the deck has S-VHS out, timebase correction, tracking & jitter correction, and never drops fields/frames, it just isn't worth the hassle of trying to fix it all later. (Ok, Avisynth wasn't around then, but same principle...) Maybe a good tape deck isn't that expensive anymore, or maybe they're more so, not sure.

If something like that was done and you're left with crap, well, at least it's plain old capture crap (say guavacomb, fft3d, ssiq, tbilateral, mcnr_simple, for cartoons an extra shot of mipsmooth and vmtoon... well, you did say it's in really bad shape).

setarip_old: it's kind of commercial, something that Pizza Hut gave away a long time ago. But what difference does it make? Even if it was commercial it's not being sold anymore. As for the person sending me the VHS itself, someone else will send me the two tapes (this one is Vol2), but in the meantime this is what I have.

foxhyshadis: I have very little cash to spend, let alone on something that will wind up as an extra in a DVD I'll be making. I'm sure something watchable can be achieved without much trouble by someone. For instance, maybe DeFreq can help out but it's too dauting for me, and recommended settings for this sample would be greatly appreciated.
