Xvid Help

Im encoding a 30 minute video from the source video which is im MPG2 Format. The resolution is of the source is 720X480 I want to create a xvid video with about 640X480 or 592x480 resolution with around 250MB File output. You have any suggestions on how to improve the quality of the video, I use GNot to encode my xvid files

One other question I see some encodes that have 24bit and mine is only 12bit why is that and how can I make it 24bit

Thanks for that info, but man I must say that all sounds a little confusing to me so maybe you could tell me what i means cause im all confused here I mean if you wanted to though

It means that if your source is DVD, then you don't want it to show 24bit.

XviD is always YV12 (12bit). What 24bit shows is that the source was 24bit which in the case of DVD means an unnecessary RGB24 colourspace conversion which is only going to reduce quality.

DVDs use 12 bit only. If a DVD encode features 24 bit then someone has likely made a 'mistake'.

If it's the XviD settings in the 'presets thread' that confused you you'll just have to take the time and take a good look at the XviD configuration dialogue in order to find all these options.

DVD MPEG2 file uses a 12bit color depth. So is MPEG4 (e.g. DivX, XviD...) file. In brief, you don't need/want any change in color depth during the conversion.

This is not only about unnecessary slowdown. Those different color depth means also different sampling points. These intermediate conversions introduce additional interpolations and samplings and distort the original picture.

For example, 24bit has color info of every pixel and 12bit has color of every 4 pixels. To convert 12bit to 24bit, we make guesses to fill out the "missing" color information. When converting back to 12bit, the guessed values are used to calculate to create the required color samples. All intermediate values are further subject to rounding errors.

That's why ppls said that unnecessary color conversions reduces the video quality.
