Personally, I always use fast recompress because:
a) I rarely use filters.
b) I have never, with or without filters, seen a difference between those two modes, except for encoding speed.

Hi!
From the dropdown "Help" menu in VirtualDub:Advantages:
· Depending on the video codecs involved, recompression might take place in a faster format, such as YUV. This can significantly speed recompression.
Disadvantages:
· May not work if the codecs cannot agree on a common image format.
· Video cannot be viewed during process.
· No image processing possible.
· Some video codecs handle YUV data incorrectly, which can result in upside-down video in this mode.

I have a .avi file which is fliped horizental .I don't want compress again .If I choose "direct copy.." ,I can's use "filter function"
If I want use filter ,I muse choose "full processing" and I must compress this file again

By the way, how did you create your original .AVI so that it's horizontally flipped?

I only use virtualdub-mpeg-2 . It can convert both mpeg1 and mpeg2 .
I don't know whether my computer is in flu :D . It make me trouble . I haven't just been able to "save Wav" . VD says that " attemp to read past frame of stream " ,etc  . I use Aurora and Ok but this software need $$$ ;)
I intend to use x264/AAC so perhaps I no use VD longer :)

Full processing mode will introduce color space conversions.
