Need to know of Basic Avisynth usage

Ok, I've seen it everywhere over the net , 'serve your file to avisynth script' and all that and I just don't know heads or tails of it.. I need to know everything about avisynth - how to use it, what all we can do with it.. Can you people guide me or point to some good guide? Please bear with this n00bie ...
