hi all, my mum has some very old home movies (total time 1hour 2 minutes), about 1935 on VHS cassette, i have had them copied to Video DVD, is there anyway i can improve the quality of the old films, preferably for free !!!

OK your not real clear on this, are you saying your mum had old film, era 1935, transfered to vhs some time back, and now you want to improve it. If you still have the movies (Motion Picture Film), then the best way to improve the VHS tape is to throw it away and start over.

If not the case throw the DVD away and do a recapture of the VHS tape and use the right plugins and tape deck to do the job.

Sorry i didnt make it clear enough, sadly :( the VHS tape is all i have (and now the DVD):(

You will do best to do a recapture of the VHS tape using a JVC 9900 or a Panasonic 1980 deck. From there you will want to use Avisynth and VD filters to get a better look. Detail is limited because of the VHS format. I use MSU's SmartBrightness & De-flicker, ColorMill 2.1, and exposure masks for hot spot. ACDsee plugin can be of benefit too in some cases. All and all my customers have been happy with the Color Recovery process.
