Is there any script I can use to add 3 seconds of black, silent space to the begining and end of a video?

BlankClip(length=75, width=720, height=576, fps=25) #3s at 25fps
Adjust to your resolution / framerate.
Check the documentation that comes with Avisynth for Blankclip.

How about:

myvideo=mpegsource("video.d2v")

blk=blankclip(myvideo,25) 'makes clip take on characteristics of "myvideo"

blk+myvideo+blk

fadeio(20)

This should work fine.
