View Full Version : LOTR EEs to one DVD9

I'm new to all of this and I'm not exactly sure how to go about this. I need to back up my LOTR EE DVDs. My kids keep getting into the DVDs and I'm afraid they're going to get damaged.
I'd like to make each extended edition movie fit onto one DVD9. The tools I own are AnyDVD, CloneDVD, DVDShrink, Nero 7 and that's about it.
How would I go about doing this and what other programs would I need? Please provide as much detail as possible.
:thanks:

I think you mean DVD5? The one with 4.8 GB.
You can use AnyDVD and CloneDVD for it. For better quality use HCEnc and encode it new.

Try DVD Rebuilder... it's quite easy to use.

hi jedisb,
if you are in fact trying to merge the two discs which make up the entire extended movie, i would highly reccomend dvdremake pro (although it is payware) or you could try pgc_edit (freeware) although it is quite complicated - there is a sticky thread in the ifo/vob editors forum on how to do this.
you can then use any program you like to fit the final disc onto the blank media of your choice.
good luck

I actually mean DVD+R DL.

I did this with "Fellowship of the Ring". I have not done it yet with my other two extended editions though. Mine was also for a Dual Layer Disc.
I probably can't be much help other than to say that I did it with Nero Recode. I'm not sure if your version of Nero includes recode or not. I believe that I used the "remake movie" option.
Perhaps I'll do "The Two Towers" and refresh my memory on how it worked.

Hi!I actually mean DVD+R DL. Since this series of DVDs doesn't contain any "special"/newer copy protection, all you have to do is:
1) Make CERTAIN to use Verbatim DVD+R DL media - Presently, it appears to be the only consistently reliable DL media
2) Use DVD Decrypter v.3.5.4 in "ISO mode" to "Read ISO" (rip the DVD as an ISO image file to your hard drive)
3) Use DVD Decrypter v.3.5.4 in "ISO mode" to "Write ISO" (burn the ISO image file to your DL media) - Select the ".MDS" file (NOT the .ISO image file directly. Among other things the "MDS" file contains required layer break information)

I'd like to make each extended edition movie fit onto one DVD9.I've done this with both Pearl Harbor and with Titanic SE.
You can use DVD Shrink on each disc, to create two VIDEO_TS sets that have only what you need on them (video, audio track, maybe a subtitle) with NO further compression. Then you use VobEdit and IfoEdit to stitch the two VOB sets together.
When I did this to Pearl Harbor, the resulting titleset ALMOST fit onto a DVD+R DL. I used DVD Shrink on it again to get it to be able to fit (only needed a few percent compression).
In the case of Titanic SE, I believe that the combined files were so big that I didn't want to compress with Shrink, but instead used DVD Rebuilder and completely re-encoded the thing with my DVD+R DL disk as the target size.
If these are just for your kids to beat-up on, while you lock the originals safely away, then I might not bother w/DVD-RB and just Shrink-and-burn. They probably aren't going to notice or care if there is a quality drop in the video.

While one persons experience may serve only as an anecdote, I purchased this 25 pack of Dual Layer disks and have had perfect burns on 20/20 of them....further I am new to this so I would perhaps be more inclined to make mistakes.

It's encouraging to hear that your Memorex DL media is serving you well ;>}
My comment regarding Verbatim DL DVD+Rs is based on MANY postings at this and other forums.
If more postings such as yours, of consistently successful burns with other DL media, start appearing with regularity, I'm sure the improved and expanded choices will be recognized - and GREATLY appreciated by we the users!

When I read this it made me think we should have an area where people could post what media they have used that has worked.
For DVD R there is The ultimate DVD recordable compatibility list (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=22974)
and I have just started DVD DL Compatability and Success List (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=109068)
Both are in the "DVD burning" section of "DVD & (S)VCD"
Hope this becomes productive....soon enought we may need one for HD-DVD and Blue-Ray....

Yes, I have Recode. I'll give it a shot. Sounds easier than the VobEdit/IfoEdit solution. My only problem is that I only have about 5GB of HD space left right now so I'm going to have to uninstall some stuff and backup some other stuff to make some room first.

@jedisb
Please clarify - Are you trying to make 1:1 copies of LOTR DVD-9s, or are you trying to put the contents of two or more LOTR DVD-9s onto one DVD-9?

i do not see how you require clarification? from the original post:I'd like to make each extended edition movie fit onto one DVD9seems pretty clear to me ...
@ jedisb
with the nero (and dvd shrink compilation) method, you will lose all menus etc. if this is acceptable to you, it would most certainly be a simple solution. however if you require menus, and would like to join the two 1/2 movie dvd's into one, you will either need to re-author and create your own menus (or alter the existing) or use the methods i described in my earlier post.
good luck

Perhaps I'm not familiar with the specific "Extended Editions". Is each movie-only on two DVDs?

I have the EE set and can answer for jedisb:
Yes, each EE movie is on two discs. Of course they are lengthy, but in addition they include both DD5.1 and DTS soundtracks as well as multiple commentary tracks.
I haven't examined my set closely yet, but I'm expecting that even after selecting an audio track and dumping commentaries & subtitles, these EE movies will exceed a single DVD-9.
For all the rave reviews about these discs, I'm expecting also that they are encoded at a very high bitrate.

Using Recode I was able to merge the part one and part two DVDs quite nicely. Movie only, Dolby 5.1 audio only, English subtitles, and removing the fan club credits. The compression level was right at 86%.
What I did find odd was that when I imported the DVDs into Recode it indicated that there were two main titles on each DVD. I watched them both and they seemed to be identical. They were the exact same file size, same audio tracks, etc. I just went with the first. Any explanation for that?

What I did find odd was that when I imported the DVDs into Recode it indicated that there were two main titles on each DVD.My LOTR set is still shrink-wrapped (!) but I would guess that if you squint at Recode's preview screen, you would see a French credit sequence, or maybe Spanish (Region 1, ya know). ;)
It is highly likely that Title 1 is the version you wanted.
OTTOMH I can't remember why I didn't like the Recode/Shrink method of combining two titlesets. I think that maybe Chapter skip from set-to-set didn't work or something like that...

Now that I fully understand what you're trying to accomplish (feeble-minded 'though I seem to be at times ;>}), the following is an alternative, should your procedure using NERO Recode prove to be less than satisfactory:
1) Use DVDDecrypter (in "File" mode, from "Edit" dropdown menu, choose "Select ALL files", NOT "Select movie files) to rip each FULL DVD to its own folder on your hard drive.
2) Then use "TMPGEnc DVD Author" to combine the two uncompressed, ripped "DVDs" to a new "DVD" on your hard drive. (You can obtain a FULLY functional free 30 day trial version of this commercial program at:
www.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/tda.html )
3) Then use DVDShrink (or Recode) to compress the "new" combined DVD to less than 7.95Gigs.
4) Then burn the "new" compressed/combined DVD to a DL DVD+R
