View Full Version : Bypass 2GB limitation on dvd-R ? (using mpeg4)

Hi all :)

I'm not really new to dvd encoding but it's been a while since I've encoded anything, I have a specific request :

I have many commercial dvds (dvd9) I want to back them up to single layer dvds (dvd5) (recordable double layer dvds are too pricey), I want the backup to meet the following specifications :

1-I want to keep maximum video quality so I don't want to use MPEG 2, I prefer use divx or xvid or some powerful codec

2- I don't want to be limited to 2GB/movie (I want to use most of the 4,5 gb offered by the dvd5)

3- Given that I have enough space, I want to back up subtitles, and other languages too

-I don't care using freeware or commercial software if necessary
-I don't care about file format : avi, mkv or anything else that give me enough control to achieve the backup
-Also I don't care if the dvd made that way will only play on PC, it's a personnal backup and I have a good PC

And off course I'm looking for the handiest way to achieve that :)

Any pointers ?

Thanks a lot ! :thanks:

Best way using dvd5 ? Please read and follow forum rules, specifically, rule 12: do not ask what's best. Thank you.

Hi

Title is now changed, again sorry for my carelessness

Adz suggested me autogk, can autogk build files >2Gb ?
Also can autogk split the >2gb file to files <2gb and also split subtitles to keep synchronization ?
Will I be able to keep as many audio streams and subtitle languages as I want ?

I'm sorry asking all these questions but just tell me wich tools and wich file formats can do it (and maybe also wich readers) and I'll find my way through

Thanks

Hi!1-I want to keep maximum video quality so I don't want to use MPEG 2, I prefer use divx or xvid or some powerful codec

3- Given that I have enough space, I want to back up subtitles, and other languages tooBased on the wording of your post, I wonder if you are aware that your original DVDs are, in fact, encoded with an extended version of MPEG2 (.VOB)?
I ask this because, based on your stated needs, I believe simply compressing (whether via DVD Rebuilder, DVD Shrink, NERO Recode, or similar) would be your wisest choice. Not only would you retain the original video format, you'd also effortlessly retain all audiostreams, all subtitle streams, all menus, all chapters, and navigation - without any 2Gb filesize limit...

2GB limit, huh? Simply burn the stuff in UDF mode!
