I'm tired of using PowerDVD and WinDVD as they are both quite bloated. Is there something more lightweight for playing back DVDs? Are there all-purpose media players that can be used to playback DVDs competently?

MPC & Zoomplayer Pro can play them back using any already installed dvd decoders (freeware or commercial). MPC might even have dscaler built in. Anyway, several other small & fast ones can, but those are my two favorites.

Zoom Player (http://www.inmatrix.com/zplayer/) together with the MPEG Video Decoder from Gabest (http://ffdshow.faireal.net/mirror/Media%20Player%20Classic/external%20filters/unicode/Mpeg2DecFilter.7z), works perfectly for me for a couple of years already.
The same MPEG Video Decoder is also integrated in Media Player Classic (http://ffdshow.faireal.net/mirror/Media%20Player%20Classic/), and so this one also capable of playing DVDs.
Configure FFDShow to handle AC3 & DTS sound and you're done, it's that easy.

lol, too late.
