I have a few mpg files that media player plays fine and completely, but virtualdub, tmpgenc, gspot etc only recognize a portion of the file, such as the first 23 minutes of a 90 minute movie. Is there a way to fix this kind of problem? (i want to re-encode them)

How did you make the MPG files?

@boyjohn
Hi!
Use TMPGEnc to first DE-multiplex and then RE-multiplex the videostream and audiostream:
TMPGEnc>>File>>MPEGTools>>Simple Demultiplex
Then
TMPGEnc>>File>>MPEGTools>>Multiplex
Let us know how it goes ;>}

that didn't work...when i de-multiplexed it, the video and audio files were only 24 minutes long

Another thing you can try is DGIndex+avisynth.

DGIndex does create the complete files, however they still have the same problem.
It seems that the problem is with the timestamps, they keep resetting to zero. In doing a search, i read this article which was written by the author of virtualdub. (i dont think mpg are VBR, but it seems to address a similiar problem)
Unfortunately, I don't yet know how to solve the sticky problem of people doing idiotic binary joins of streams together; this causes the timestamps to restart from zero at the join point, which is problematic because there is no central index to tell where the join point(s) may be. Seeking by byte position alone doesn't work because VBR files don't have a fixed ratio, and unfortunately, VBR video files don't have the indices that are usually written with VBR audio files.
That was written in 2001 though...is there a fix for this type of thing yet?
(no, i wasnt the one who joined the files, so don't call me names, lol)

**EDIT**no, i wasnt the one who joined the filesIf you aren't the author of these files, you shouldn't be posting here...

hi boyjohn,
it is not our position to question the legitamacy of your source material, however if you freely give this information, and the information you give "inferrs" that you are processing illegal content, then we have no choice but to close the thread (and in repetative circumstances, issues strikes).
to be honest, simply saying that you did not join the files yourself, would not usually give me cause to close a thread, however, as you have already received all the help you need on this matter, i will close it to save further self-incrimination on your part ;)
