i get errors when im tryin to play a sample of the encoded file what codecs do i needmPlayer or ffdshow with theora and vorbis enabled. You'll also need an OGG splitter.
In term of quality and filesize RealAnime beats FreeAnime, but only FreeAnime is patent-free on the technology used.

can you make and encoder for wmv
Sirber
18th March 2006, 19:32
nope. in .net also? :p
Doom9
18th March 2006, 19:34
wmv would kinda beat the point of patent free, wouldn't it? However, patent-free at this time also means low quality.. at least video quality.
Sirber
18th March 2006, 19:41
Yep. Theora needs a lot more bitrate than x264 to get acceptable quality.
I just made this UI for fun and to have something to encode with Theora.

18th March 2006, 19:46
Let's see what Fluendo can do about video quality with the dirac reimplementation (Schrödinger-Project). And aren't there lots of possibillities to improve theora, too?

The Show Wavelet codec its Patent-Free too ??
It getting some accetable quality and speed
Sirber
18th March 2006, 19:55
I heard Dirac is very slow. I had Snow in the betas of RealAnime 4, but quality is too poor to be usable. I don't know about their patents.
In any case, this is only a gui for ffmpeg2theora.
hellfred
18th March 2006, 20:02
AFAIK Snow uses heavily patend technics. Building a videocodec that does not confict with any patents is impossible. Wasn't that the reason for the stop of tarkin, xiphs try to do a free video codec themselfes? Theora uses On2s technics for free, dirac those of bbc.

CD is making a build that supports AVS as input. That will give a better start to FreeAnime! :D

sirber can you make and mpeg encoder then
Sirber
18th March 2006, 21:16
@killerhex
There are alreany many out there. Also, this thread is about Theora and Vorbis, if you do not wish to talk about that please move along. I'll also remind you this rule:
3) Keep the focus: Questions outside the scope of a certain forum will either be moved, locked or simply be deleted.
Thanks.

@bond
Can you clean this thread please? It's become too much OT. Thanks!

never read the rules but ok keep working on the theora+vorbis for better quality on encoding with it
bond
19th March 2006, 10:13
And aren't there lots of possibillities to improve theora, too?definitely. theora is comparable to mpeg-4 asp and in some regards even better than asp as it supports for example loop and multiple reference frames, more cqm matrices than asp aso...
it just needs someone to enhance the current encoder (mainly still being the vp3 one from on2) or write a new one from scratch
Sirber
19th March 2006, 11:41
I made a test on Naruto (24 minutes) and with quality 3 and -2 it came out at 87MB. Quality is inferior to RealVideo and x264 at same filesize.
I think Theora has more chances against ASP and at medium to high bitrates than with low bitrates. My files has muskito noise on subs and squares in dark area and in high motion scenes.

The problem is ffmpeg2theora itself: it can't do a 2-pass encoding.
Switch to ffdshow instead.
Sirber
20th March 2006, 13:03
VFW?!?!?!?! Never! :sly:
bond
20th March 2006, 13:19
ffdshow supports outputting correct theora .ogg files (yeah, not .ogm)

VFW?!?!?!?! Never! :sly:
Sorry, i'm almost a newbie: why ?
Sirber
20th March 2006, 17:29
I would to code VFW interface in my GUI, which is long and painful. It's way easier to use a CLI like x264.exe, mencoder.exe or ffmpeg2theora.exe :)
PatchWorKs
21st March 2006, 10:24
Yes but you can use VirtualDubMod as an engine, for VFW encodings... (check out FairUse Wizard, just in my signature)
Sirber
21st March 2006, 13:08
Thanks but no thanks :) I'm gonna stick with ffmpeg2theora. Also, since I'm not using theora myself, I won't continu the development of the GUI unless users are interrested in.

The GUI is in delphi :p, as RealAnime.
svn://svn.detritus.qc.ca/detritus/FreeAnime
I'll polish it some day, with avs input, save/load settings and maybe filtering like in RealAnime.

Are u sure ?
2006 June 20 - libtheora 1.0alpha7 release
Sirber
26th July 2006, 17:26
it's not libtheora that handle 2 pass, but ffmpeg2theora ;)
celtic_druid
26th July 2006, 17:31
Last update I noticed was to do with AMD64 asm, so basically nothing. 2 pass really has nothing to do with libtheora though, ffmpeg2theora would need updating.
and it was updated recently. Time remaining I think was added in the last couple of days. Nothing of major interest like 2 pass though.

Before you run scared, FreeAnime is in Delphi 7 VCL :)
Now run! :D
Sirber
15th August 2006, 16:26
the core of FreeAnime is going to RealAnime 5.
This project will be terminated.
@ffmpeg devs
would be cool to have 2pass in ffmpeg2theora, would give a boost to the codec.
Sirber
15th August 2006, 17:01
looks like there's a new version of ffmpeg2theora, June 03 2006.
still no 2pass :(

patch by Moritz Grimm <gtgbr@gmx.net>
* prevent buffer overflows / crashes when handling filenames that are
too long
* do not allow user-supplied strings in format strings
* more consistent, and sometimes corrected (and nicer :)) error messages
* no more rindex(), it is deprecated and strrchr() is ANSI C and in the
POSIX standard. I'm absolutely positive that all your supported
platforms have it (and not only Windows.)
