I assume you wouldn't have posted this if CCE did in fact look better than Autoqmatenc.

:thanks: Fascinating stuff -- thanks for all your hard work! AQE isn't half bad, but it appears that CCE pretty clearly trumps it.

In the interest of being objective I don't look at the screenshots when I take them

Insane2986 that was some nice work... but I have one problem with it. I said this before but still shots really don't work to compare MPEG2 sources.
First, you may be comparing I frames with one encoder to P frames from other... I's always win.
Second, comparing still frame with mepg2 is like comparing Icecream by looking at it.... you have no way of telling how the frames before or the frames after relate to the frame you are viewing.... transcoders do a great job with stills but when you view them as a movie...encoders win.
Stills are a nice way to look at or view how an Encoder is dealing with certain material but as for comparing... viewing as a movie and letting your eyes tell you is the best way. Remember, visual perception is the key to MEPG2 and how frames relate to each other over a span of time or GOP.

Ah I guess you learn something new every day :)
I do have to disagree (slightly) with the issue of using still frames to compare encodes though. I always remove extras from my DVDs, and it's nearly impossible to notice any differences between the encodes at high bitrates. If I didn't zoom in and compare single pictures, I wouldn't even know they're different encoders. Viewing the movie may no doubt be better, but for myself (and especially for online comparison) screenshots still look like they're the way to go
