Undersized output after blanking

I am backing up "Lock, Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels" R1 (DVD released 1999). All I used was RB -- didn't end up messing with anything in RB-Opt, no pre-editing before RB, just a straight rip. My source is a one-sided DVD9, which contains both WS (3.762G) & FS (3.789M) flavours of the film.

After Prepare (which wanted to reduce the disc by 53.9%), I "blanked" the whole FS titleset in the Preview window (and saved changes). I then encoded & rebuilt the disc as an ISO. the resultant image is 2.46G, and it plays fine, but RB must have gone ahead and reencoded the WS version & extras at 53.9%. Shouldn't DVD-RB have re-calculated the necessary compression ratio? I know in the past, I thought I had to re-Prepare after blanking, but that just cleared my blanking, so surely that isn't my problem.

Also, don't know if it matters, but the Rebuilding (phase iii) took an astounding 87 mins -- usually takes something on the order of 15-20m.

still had to cut down the file so that the text was short enough to post. hopefully that's adequate info.

When you have two versions on the disc there is no way for DVD-RB to know that. It has to decide somehow what is the feature and what is the extras. It does that by selecting the VTS that is larger than the others. Everything else is considered to be Extras... even if it's another version of the film.

What probably happened here is that you saved more space than could be used by the movie. Since you can't make it larger than the original... all those bits you saved just went to waste. Currently there is no way to redirect it to another extra (in your case the other version).

Have you tried just leaving everything at the default? You might be surprised at the quality of the result.

You're absolutely right -- after clearing FS, the remainder could fit on a DVD5. So after blanking the FS VTS, I need to go through all the rest and do "force no reencode," huh?

Well, must be an easier way to do things in this instance. Don't want to use Shrink as I'd like to keep the menu structure. Will look around for alternatives.

And yeah, the 2.4G output doesn't look bad, by any stretch of the imagination, but there's no reason to compress at all, as you rightly pointed out. Thank you!

Shrink WILL keep the menu structure if you simply set the FS segment to "still image". You aren't reauthoring, just substituting the video stream.

You could also just use PGCEdit to blank out the FS titleset and keep the menu.

even if his extras (including the ws version) were encoded, shouldnt they recieve the bits from blanking the FS version? if his ws movie is on 3.7gb, there is no way the final disk should end up at 2.6gb if the space is recovered.

No. I'm assuming the fullscreen was the largest VTS... so the widescreen version is also an "Extra"... all recovered bits from reduction go toward the feature (largest VTS) -- which in this case was blanked.... If, however, he had kept the fullscreen and blanked the widescreen it probably would have been different (but still limited to the original average bitrate).

This is one of those cases where it probably would be better to preprocess and remove the fullscreen before running DVD-RB.

Would it be possible to add a switch to choose to apply bits to main feature only, or to the whole disk? that would solve these kinds of issues

jdobbs is absolutely correct, the FS version is marginally bigger:
My source is a one-sided DVD9, which contains both WS (3.762G) & FS (3.789M) flavours of the film.

and yeah, I thought, like JP, that the recovered bits would be passed around, but it's fine if they aren't. a case like this demonstrates that it would be nice if the user could flag the VTS that contains the main film (or the VTS that he doesn't want to be considered an extra). I'm sure this has been requested before, however.

There's a trick which was mentioned before somewhere else:
Delete the last vob (or better move it somewhere else as this is a test) of the VTS in which the FS is stored => WS is the biggest VTS and should be the main movie now.

I haven't done this yet but if I remember correctly it worked. Give it a try.

It'll work as long as the last VOB of the VTS doesn't contain a full segment (VOBID/CELLID) -- in that case the rebuild might choke because there is no M2V for that segment (even a blank one). I'm pretty sure it has worked before, though.

ENHANCEMENT: Added code to enhance the functioning of automatic "no reencoding" feature introduced in v1.08. Now any space reallocated due to "Steal Space" or the "Half/Half" functions that is not needed to enable the "no reencoding" extraction is returned to the Extras. This allows you to "overkill" in order to force extraction -- but the amount of actual reduction will only be what is truly necessary.

Trying to grasp the ramifications of this feature. Does this relate to the issue that we've been discussing in this thread? That is, by blanking, if one ends up with enough space to preserve the main VTS without change, will the extra bits be allocated to the extras? Maybe not, huh? You don't mention blanking, and steal space and so on are set before Prepare, whereas blanking is set after the Prepare, so maybe blanking & steal space are apples & oranges, so to speak.

Here's the purpose of the new feature: Suppose you look at the original disc and its obvious you can keep the feature intact because it's smaller than a DVD-5. But what action would you take? You'd have to calculate it out... not now. You can just "overkill" it -- by, say, selecting 50% reduction for the extras. Then if it only requires 15% -- that's ok -- the left-overs get reallocated and it will fill the disc.
