View Full Version : Help with DVD-RB

I trying to get DVD-RB to rip DVDs, but I don't know where to start. Cause I was using shrink it but read that the move quality will not be as good as DVD-RB. So if I get a flat screen HD TV I'll be able to see the diff but with my CRT I can't tell the diff. For one thing it looks so complicated :readguid: :readguid: :readguid: I've read the Doom9 manuel for it and it said a bunch of word that I didn't understand. So I'm wondering if some one could post me a Ripping DVD in DVD-RB for Dummies small manuel please. Just give me the basics by telling me what buttons to click, so all I want art the step to copy the DVD to HD and from HD to Blank DVD.

The big secret is using the full installer. All the "extra" wording in the guides is to help you understand what is happening. But you don't really need[i] to. Here are some hints for ease of use.
INSTALLING:
1. Install any commercial encoders you may have (like CCE or ProCoder) first (before DVD Rebuilder). That way DVD-RB can recognize them when it installs and configure for them automatically.
2. Know your directory structure before you start. Here's a good concept to work with. You only have to do this once.
2.1. Create a directory called C:\DVDRIP
2.2. Create an input directory called C:\DVDRIP\SOURCE
2.3. Create a working directory called C:\DVDRIP\WORKING
2.4. Create an output directory called C:\DVDRIP\OUTPUT
3. Run the DVD Rebuilder Installer -- when prompted for directories -- use the ones you created. It may also ask you some questions about the commercial encoder you've installed.
As for using DVD-RB... while it leaves you a lot of room to become an expert... you don't need to. At this point it's just a matter of 3 steps: RIP, REBUILDER, and BURN.
MAKING A BACKUP
You first have to get the DVD copied to your hard drive and (for most) deencrypted. You can do that with DVD Decrypter (free), DVD Fab (free), or AnyDVD (inexpensive). With AnyDVD you can even use the DVD itself as the SOURCE directory -- but that's another story.
1.1 Set the output of the RIPPING program to the SOURCE directory from step 2.2.
1.2 Run the RIP... it usually takes 15 minutes or so.
2. Start DVD-RB. Make sure the source directory, working directory, and output directories have to be set to those you created. If you configured it properly during installation the working and output will already be set. Point the source to C:\SOURCE and click "Backup". That's it. In a couple of hours (depends on your processor) you will have an AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folder under the output directory (e.g. C:\OUTPUT\DVDFILES\VIDEO_TS) that can be burned to DVD+-R.
3. When completed you have to burn the disc to a blank DVD. If you're using the Pro version this step can be done automatically as a part of step 2... but with the freeware you need to run a burning package. If you have a burner -- use whatever software came with it. The choices are endless.
That's it. The disc can then be inserted into any DVD player and played. If you want to start working with the advanced feature -- sure, go ahead, that's why they are there. But you don't [i]need to.

So DvD rebuild dosen't rip the movie from the CD but it re-encodes the move when its going to a blank DVD?
Could I use DVD Shrink to rip it to HD also how do Edit extras that are on the DVD cause sometime (ok all the time) you don't want pre-view of other movies. Cause this program will be replaceing the Shrink program that I use to backup my DVDs.

correct, dvdrb will not break the encryption. Shrink is not the best tool either. USe Anydyd, or dvd fab decrypter (do a search for more on these)
with the pro version, once you prepare the disk, you can blank any segment you want
AndreLi
17th March 2006, 17:15
Thats what I have the pro ver. and I have AnyDVD cause encoding people come out with new stuff almost every day and any dvd stays on top of it.
pro version, once you prepare the disk, you can blank any segment you want
How the heck do I do that also does the blank out have to be continouse or can you blank out certain segments.
Also does any dvd do ripping cause I thought it just did drcryption of DVDs
jdobbs
17th March 2006, 18:13
With AnyDVD the "Rip" is pretty much invisible to you. AnyDVD does all the actions that a ripper would do in terms of removing protection -- only it does it in the background. In order to "Rip" the disc with AnyDVD you can just do a file copy into the SOURCE directory. Alternatively you could just point DVD-RB to the disc as the SOURCE -- but that may be slower (hard drive is usually considerably faster than a DVD read).
You could also run DVD Decrypter over the top of AnyDVD and let it copy the files for you.
As for editing... go into three click mode (unclick "One Click Mode" in the MODE menu) and do a PREPARE. At the end of PREPARE you can then click on the "Segment Editor/Viewer" -- blanking is pretty intuitive from there on out. You can double click on the segments, or select from a menu.

What about other languges can I also cut those out .. I'm gonna give it a whirl now that I know you copy the Whole DVD do HD then edit ... thank ;)
jdobbs
17th March 2006, 20:09
Cutting out other languages is very easy. You can make it automatic for all languages except the ones you want in the SETUP menu... or you can just double-click on the ones you want to delete on the "Input Settings" tab. A big red "X" will indicate languages that have been removed.
AndreLi
17th March 2006, 20:43
Now I have the DVD on my HD but I don't know how to edit it.I clicked Seg editor/Viewer but I can't access the tab it does nothing sorry about the languages question that was kinda a dumb one. I'am trying to view what I want to edit to see if I want to edit it out or not but I can't see a way to do that.
But thank you sincerly for helping me and walking me thourgh this cause I have never work with this software befor and the manuel I kinda hard to read cause I'm just now getting in to video editting and aurthoring DVDs. So thanks
jdobbs
17th March 2006, 20:51
Please note my response above...
You have to do a PREPARE in order to access the Segment Editor/Viewer. It takes about 5 minutes. The PREPARE phase scans the source video stream in order to get all the information necessary (like which segments are located where).
AndreLi
17th March 2006, 21:08
Right after I posted that quesion I found that out but thank you. But I ran into a problem with the preview and edit tab. I can see the video but can't hear the audio.
jdobbs
17th March 2006, 21:16
There is no audio. The preview tab is not meant to be a player -- it just lets you see the contents of the segment you have selected.
AndreLi
17th March 2006, 22:43
So let me see if I got this right you "prepare" then you "encode " last thing you "backup" and you your own burning softwaret to copy it to a TSVideo directory on a ver 9 DVD.
How do you know which encoder to use and also I seeing the only way to edit the dvd you self is to choice a backup ver. Full, Movie, movie and menu (which I don't understand cause who the heck wants just menues) and movie, menus, slideshow. There isn't one where you can have the movies and some or all the extras.
Cause in Shrink it the software allows you to take or block out certain thing that are on the DVD. So I'm guessing theres no way for me to do that with this.
AndreLi
18th March 2006, 03:05
I think I have it ... I can use Shrink it to rip the DVD to my HD with no comprssion then doing it that way I can take out what I want. Then I use DVD-RB to prepare it then encode it and backit up. For some good quality
Cause DVD Shrink has a bad A** editing program.

i reference my other post.
shrink is not a good tool to decrypt your files to the HD, use anydvd or dvd fab decrypter
setarip_old
18th March 2006, 19:13
shrink is not a good tool to decrypt your files to the HDThat's a misleading statement. The only thing that's "not good" about using DVD Shrink to decrypt/rip a DVD is the fact that it's not able to rip ARccOS or RipGuard protected DVDs. Other than that, it's decryptions are perfectly acceptable...
On the othe hand, using DVDFab Decrypter to rip can lead to problematic copies, since DVDFab Decrypter automatically replaces unreadable sectors with "dummy" sectors...
AndreLi
19th March 2006, 05:45
No I just gonna use it to copy what I want form the DVD (in uncompressed format) and have it reauthor what I want foromt the DVD cause DVDFab (I can't say much about cause I never used it before) DVD Decryptor I know, only allows you to rip the whole DVD but with Shirnk it let you edit out what you want reauthor a DVD with what you want. Cause after I copy what I want to my HD I'll re encode it with DVD-RB and burn it to DVD with Nero. Cause ArccOS and RipGuard are cryptic algorthims for DVD movies and I have AnyDvD for that.
setarip_old
19th March 2006, 07:04
That's a perfectly acceptable use for it (DVD Shrink) ;>}

Having a problem I prepared the DVD files then I Prepared them now I'm trying to rebuild them and it giving me this error.
DVD rebuild experiencing an error opening output VOB. then it give me a time and date
It made a D2VAVS folder any I tryed pointing it to that but the rebuild button dimmed out then I went back to the orginal directory.
jdobbs
23rd March 2006, 03:51
You don't point to the D2VAVS directory... you point to it's parent directory.... D2VAVS is created by DVD Rebuilder in the working directory along with DVDFILES.
It sounds like your directories are hosed up -- you may want to post your REBUILDER.INI file...

Can you, please, post your Rebuilder.ini File?
It's on Rebuilder's folder... just edit it with notepad then copy paste its contents, here.
You can try my "Rebuilder's Reporter" too (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=102563&highlight=Rebuilder%27s+Reporter)
I gess nobody ever used it but who knows... maybe it can help in your case :D

But what I do need help on is pointing it into the righ directory to have it do what it does. You're making this much more complicated than it need be... You didn't need to point to anything after prepare. The working directory is already established. All you needed to do was push the ENCODE button. The BACKUP button was enabled by default when you installed DVD-RB -- you had to switch to three-click mode to make it go away. If you installed with the full installer, the encoder paths were set up for you and you wouldn't be getting any errors about the encoder.
I think you'll be much better off uninstalling, then installing again and leaving the settings at their defaults. Then you can just push the BACKUP button and it will do its job.

Have you tried "Rebuilder's Reporter" on your system?
And... can you remind me what is the problem... looking at your INI file you should be able to press "Backup" button... wait a few hours and having the DVD ready :)

I just did a search for the cct.exe on my system and couldn't find it so where and How do I get it
Which encoder is the best ???
I think thats my problem my encoder file its not on my system.

It isn't very likely that CCE Basic was installed in the "Program Files" directory.... by default it installs in:
"C:\Program Files\Custom Technology\Cinema Craft Encoder Basic\cct2.exe"
Did you browse for that file path or type it in?
CCE Basic is a commercial encoder that must be purchased... try selecting "HC Encoder" under the MODE menu -- it's slower but of similar quality and is installed with DVD-RB.
AndreLi

which is the best encoder sinse HC Encoder is so simple so I can get it for some good quality dvd backups
jdobbs
23rd March 2006, 18:55
Cinema Craft Encoder does not come with DVD-RB. It costs $58 and can be purchased at www.cinemacraft.com. I'd suggest, though, that you try HC Encoder first.

Sorry... Rule 12 of this forum:12) How NOT to post on this forum:
5 minutes after your initial post you reply to your own post writing something like "Why is nobody helping me? I'm sure you know the answer". Once somebody replies to your thread but doesn't give you exactly the answer you've been expecting you insult them.
Do not ask "what's best" because this question cannot be answered objectively. Each and everyone has their own view about what's best in a certain area. The best is what works best for you!
You have two freeware encoders installed on your system (packaged in Rebuilder's Installer... so assuming you used the installer and didn't unselected them... they should be on Rebuilder's folder on a directory called "Encoders")... both deliver a great quality... at this point my advice goes to HC, 'cause QuEnc still has a little "undersize" problem (dragongodz is working on it)...
So try what jdobbs told you... just select HC Mode and give it a try.
AndreLi

I thinking my processor can't encode with that software. I started the process at 2:00 this after noon and now it 12:00 at night ... 9 hours that too long for any DVD ... I might as well watch the movie and mentally memorize it :) in 9 hrs.
But let me say thanks to every one who help me out with this ... Ya I was a bother but I got it done and a lesson was learned it the process. And Rockas I will try to reword my posting appropriately.
So back to Shrink ... Question at what percentage ... 70 60 50 percent (when encodeing with shrink ) should I not use a Duel layer DVD when Backing up on of my DVDs to get good quality on the Backup. I don't want to see the quality really depresiate while watching it (on a HD TV) Cause with my CRT TV I can't tell the difference between the original DVD and the Copy. So please untill I get a newer system I'm stuck with Shrink
setarip_old
24th March 2006, 08:26
at what percentage ... 70 60 50 percent (when encodeing with shrink ) should I not use a Duel layer DVDThat's a totally SUBJECTIVE question and it's not really fair to ask anyone. What I, with my aging/aged eyes find acceptable may be completely unacceptable to you. The size and quality of your HD tv affects apparent quality. The type of movie affects apparent compression quality - highly intense action or not, extreme color and color variations or not, type and number audiostreams, etc.
You'll have to do your own experimenting with each DVD...

Something else is clearly wrong. Fourteen hours with HC? That could only happen if you computer is really, really slow or your disc was exceptionally fragmented. On my middle-of-the-road system it takes about 3 hours to do a complete disc. A movie-only encode like this one would take about 2 hours.

@AndreLi
Let's get serious about this now.
What kind of system are you running?
I'm asking you this 'cause I have an old system that I use for tests and it can't go closer to the times you are posting.
It's a computer with:
Processor: amd xp 2000+
memory: 768MB DDR (not DDR II)
vga: Radeon 9600 PRO (this is not important but just to get you the picture)
HDD: 2 seagate 80GB 7200rpm 2MB/4MB cache (I'm not sure about this :))
motherboard: ECS (can't remember the rest... but it's not a good one... believe me ;))
Well... I could give you the rest of the components but they are not important... the main thing here is Processor... Memory... discs.
Now... this computer makes a backup (using HC) in about 4 hours most and 2,5 to 3 hours using CCE 2.50
So... I repeat... what kind of system you have? We can't help you if you don't help us helping you :D
edit:
Oh! by the way you said:
I just did a search for the cct.exe on my system and couldn't find it so where and How do I get it
But you should be searching for a "cct.exe" 'cause you path points to a "cct2.exe"... anyway... according to the Installer code "cct2.exe" is the CCE Basic executable file... this means that (if) you don't have it installed on your system you either set the path manually or... I don't know lol ... the fact is that the installer searches on the registry for CCE pathes... can you (eventually) have CCE basic installed and don't know about it? Are you using your computer?
Thank you
triky40
24th March 2006, 18:34
I agree with Rockas. What is your computer system?
My computer is Celeron 466 mhz with 256 megabyte of Ram and I can not run DVD Rebuild Pro with HC encoder. I can run with Quech encoder but it took 13 to 14 hours. I gave up. My system is too old for software. Have to use another computer.
Just my 2 cents
