I'm having contrast problem encoding in Windows Media Encoder 5 mbps 1280 by 720 from a Fraps recording uncompressed avi. Someone told me that contrast problems are player problems, not encoders, but then how come video from Windows Media Encoder plays back with light contrast in Windows Media Player?

Also, can you make a RSS feed for the doom9.org news updates?

I've seen the problem before and I know for sure it's not an encoder issue because it doesn't repro on all machines. Possible culprits:

1) If your uncompressed AVI is YV12 or YUY2, whatever codec is handling those formats (typically DivX, Huffyuv or ffdshow) might be introducing the luma range conversion issue.

2) Video renderer. Can you repro the issue with overlay, VMR-7 and VMR-9? You can use Media Player Classic to switch between renderers.

3) Video card driver. At some point the video card needs to convert YUV video to RGB in order to display it on your screen. Nvidia and ATI are fairly inconsistent in their implementation of the luma range conversion. People complain about it on AVSForum regularly.

Also try taking the video that looks bad on your machine and playing it back on a completely different machine.
