Okay, so we all know who makes these images ..

But my question is *what* are these images supposed to be doing?
Personally, "Jumping for DRM Boy" doesn't do anything for me, but
I find the "Anti-Piracy flower" very pretty.

Anyone know what portion of these images is so offensive as to make
recording/editing software/hardware supposedly fail?

My Googling turned up nada, this has been a long standing curiousity for
me, thought I'd finally ask.

It's the Macrovision copy protection system

I think most every dvd I own has one or the other on it.

That is my question exactly, I can't see how they are an
anti-copying mechanism.

The only theory I have so far is that the flash of color might
mess with the auto-tracking feature of a VCR?

It's not "Macrovision", but it is another (feeble) attempt at copy protection. If you don't PROPERLY rip a DVD containing one or the other of these simplistic protection schemes (DVD Decrypter v.3.5.4 disposes of this protection form quite readily), when you try to playback your rip (or a copy made from the rip), you'll find yourself viewing these images, rather than the movie...

Essentially, yes. They were part of early attempts at structure protection.

DVD Shrink has problems with them at times, as would the "biggest market share" DVD duplicator out there - DVD X Copy!

So... that copy protection picture has copies of an identical flower from xp inside it...
Maybe they're trying to tell us something. :rolleyes:

nah, they were both designed by a rather famous guy called Getty Images, i suspect.

i've never seen the above images before. is it an american thing?

it must be annoying having to author one of these discs though.

no, i mean author. sucks being leaned on by a client to do something you don't believe in. i don't do a lot of authoring myself (i'm the video geek), but my colleages are sick of having to make un-skippable copyright messages and logos, having to put the MPAA/AFACT "you wouldn't steal a car, etc" trailer on everything... booby-trapping a perfectly good disc would just be the pits and annoy everyone involved but the clients. although bona-fide structure protection probably only happens at the replication stage - the plant would reject such a messed-up master if it came from anywhere else.

ripping would in fact be fun - like defeating a foe :)

Using DVDD, It may indeed 'unreference' them in the output, but the images are still there. I find the flower mostly
in the VTS_0?_0.VOB files, a 224KB size is a giveaway.
Jumping for DRM boy is in VIDEO_TS.VOB (on my discs), and takes up several Megabytes.

That adds up, so I find myself using PGCedit or Vobblanker to reclaim the space.

ripping would in fact be fun - like defeating a foe


Something about that comment I think a lot of us can relate to :)

Does this still happen if you set DVD Decrypter to "Ignore unreferenced VTS sets"?

In DVDD's "File" mode I use all the removal options except angle
processing, and occasionally uncheck PUOP removal (for stuff like
Star Wars Discs) , so yes.

No big deal to blank them out later, I had just wondered what
those images were supposed to accomplish for the longest time.
