View Full Version : How to fix "Chapter Selection" after deleting the fullframe version
evestorm

I have backed up R1 of "Blink." The film has two versions on the disc, the fullframe and widescreen. I have set the DVD jump directly to the video menu and blanked out the unwanted AR using Clone DVD 2 in a bit of pre processing. I have also set the play button to automatically play the Widescreen by default and not access the AR menu which it previously did. My problem is how to get the chapter selection buttons not to go to the AR menu when selected, but rather to automatically go to the widescreen version. I apologize ahead of time for my newbness as I am still learning, and appreciate any reply ahead of time.

evestorm,
If I were you, I would use PgcEdit to bypass the AR menu. Open your DVD, find the AR menu (use the preview for that), and when you find it, select it, right-click and select "Kill PGC playback". The menu will then be shown, and you can select which button you want selected by default (select the one that picks the right AR) then click "Kill playback". Save and Test.
This will make it so the AR menu never shows and instead behaves as if you had pushed the button you selected when you did your Kill Playback... Should solve your problem.

Thanks for the advice Jeanl. "Blink" has one of those AR's that if you just select the "scene selection" of the DVD from the opening menu and then select a scene it will pop up and ask the AR you want. So with this method you described above, when I select a scene to jump to it will automatically know I want the correct AR?
Thanks again for the reply. I am just getting more into PGCedit and it awesome.

Yes, it would automatically do what you would have done manually (pressing the right AR button).

Thanks a bunch. I will give it a try.

Oh well it was worth a shot.
There are two AR spots in the DVD. One is the little motion thing that leads into the AR and the other is the still frame of the AR itself. When I followed your directions at the end I got the following error:
I am lost of course.
When I test it, it of course still plays the AR menu briefly.

evestorm,
Rather than attaching an image, host it at http://www.imageshack.us/ and past the link they provide, then you don't have to wait for an attachment...
Well, let's see. Now you're at a point where your don't go to the AR after your scene selection, but you still see a bit of the menu intro. You should try to locate that bit. If you're lucky, it's in a PGC of its own, and you'll be able to kill playback on that one as well...
You might want to post your IFOs somewhere so we can take a look at your problem.

I think this is just a warning. The menu intro has to live in another PGC or it would have been killed along with the menu, try to locate it, and see if it's in its own PGC.

Ok what I do is this:
There is a motion menu that fades into the AR select screen and then a 0 second file that is the menu itself. When I kill playback on both of these and then select the widescreen and do kill playback and save...I then open the DVD and when I select play move it takes me to the AR "movie" but it then bounces right back to the main menu. I am such a noob at this. Let me know what I need to post and I will and again thanks for the help.

evestorm, it's hard to help you without looking at your IFOs. Things might be a bit messed up at this point, and it's hard to tell how they got messed up, expecially because you used Clone DVD 2, and I'm not sure how good a job it does at bypassing a menu.
Here's what I suggest: start again from the original DVD (fresh rip)
- Remove the unwanted AR in PgcEdit (it's going to be in its own VTS, right click on of of the PGCs and select blank all VTST title).
- Find your AR menu, and kill playback on it, selecting the right AR button.
Test in a soft player. Your navigation won't go straight to the main menu, and you will still have your menu transition, but at least this should work.
If it does work, make an incremental backup (PgcEdit, File menu), and kill playback on the menu transition PGC.
Test again in soft player to make sure all is OK.
Then, all you need to do is make sure navigation jumps to the main menu. PgcEdit can do that for you (and it's really good at it). There is a guide here (http://www.videohelp.com/%7Er0lZ/pgcedit/third_party/blutach/How_to_use_PgcEdit_new_macro.htm)
but it's not hard: start the trace mode (Ctrl-T), find your main menu PGC and put a breakpoint right there. Then trace to that menu and when you get there use the "Jump to PGC" in the PGC menu.
I'm suggesting you take things in phases, so you'll see at which point things get messed up...

Wow we think alike. I have the DVD with me at work as I actually DO own it.;) I am going to rip and do just as you said and report back. My goal is to make it so the initial "play" button goes straight to the WS version of the film (I can actually do this with no problems) and then to make it so when you select "scene selection" from the first play menu and then select a scene it will go to that scene in the correct WS version of the film and not prompt with the AR still menu that it currently does.
Thanks for all the help.

Oh OK! In that case, it's even simpler: You can use the "jump to PGC" feature of PgcEdit, to jump to the movie instead of the menu, and that will solve all your problems in one shot, because you will have to trace through your AR menu and press the right buttons.
To do that, starting from a fresh rip (before or after you remove the unwanted AR), start the trace mode. Find your movie PGC, and put a break point at the start of the PGC (at the top of the pre-command area).
Then start the trace (by pressing the "eject" button and pressing "Run") and navigate through all the menus that might pop up (the main menu, then the AR menu) all the way to the break point. When you get there, select "Jump to PGC upon DVD insert" in the PGC menu.
This will solve all your problems, because your AR will have been selected (by you) during the trace, and the navigation will not ask you to select it again from now on (100% of DVD are that way, they ask you the AR once and then never again, until you eject/reload).

Just a quick note before I test this. Wont placing the Jump to DVD on insert macro at the movie PGC cause the movie to start as if I had done a movie only rip? I do want to keep the main menu and have it jump past the AR menu when play or a chapter from the scene selection is pressed.

It will make the DVD jump to the movie as soon as you insert it in the player. But your menu will still be there, and accessible via the menu button.
If that's not what you want (if you want to go to the menu when you insert the DVD) then follow my original instructions, and put the breakpoint in the menu PGC, not the movie PGC.
This will not bypass the AR menu, so you'll have to do that as a second step.

I think this one may have beaten me. Here are the steps and where it goes wrong:
Remove the unwanted AR in PgcEdit (it's going to be in its own VTS, right click on of of the PGCs and select blank all VTST title
(I did this one just as indicated and it worked perfectly of course)
- Find your AR menu, and kill playback on it, selecting the right AR button
(Ok I did this on the still AR menu not the motion one that pops up after you hit play from the main menu. It did work when I accessed the scene selection and select a scene the Widescreen version started up, but strangely enough the chapters are off. When Chapter 3 is pressed Chapter 2 actually plays which is weird as I have checked the command and chapter 3 of the title is what is selected)
Ok then when I kill the playback on the AR motion menu it not only still plays when you select "Play" from the main menu but it plays and then (I guess because I killed playback on the still AR menu) it just returns to the main menu.
I am officially lost and confused...nothing new there.

OK evestorm, I don't understand why it's not working, but I think we tried everything we could remotely.
So here's what you're going to do:
- Rip again, start with a fresh one.
- Run menushrink on the DVD, not keeping the audio. make sure you uncheck "skip menu intro/outro" in the advanced options, because i want to be able to see them! This will turn your menus vobs into very tiny ones, tiny enough to send via email.
- Zip up all the IFOs, and all the menu vobs (i.e., video_ts.vob, and vts_xx_0.vob), but none of the title vobs.
- Send that to me at jeanldvd at free dot fr.
I'll take a look and tell you what I find! (I'll post the relevant info so other readers can follow if they wish to)

Sent and thanks for looking at it. Oddly enough my ripper did not rip the VTS_02_0.VOB file that is 0KB is file size. I included it though.

Hi evestorm,
Well I looked at it and there's something that PgcEdit does (or does not do) that puzzles me... I've asked r0lZ for clarification, I'll post (or he will) when I know more.
In the meantime, here's what seems to go wrong...
When you select VTSM1 PGC8 (your AR menu) and right-click to kill it, you get a menu popping up, you select the second cell (the one that actually contains the AR menu), select widescreen and press Kill-PGC. You get the warning you mentioned above, which is where things go wrong.
The commands go from:
********** pre commands:
[20 D7 00 0E 00 00 04 02] 1 if ( gprm(14) > 0 ) then { LinkCN Cell 2, button 1 (1024) }

[20 04 00 00 00 00 00 01] 3 LinkPGCN PGC 1
********** cell commands:
The problem is that the first two precommands are still executed, which causes your AR menu to still show...
The fix is to remove the two first precommands (select them and delete) to get this:
********** pre commands:
[00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00] 1 NOP
[56 00 00 00 04 00 00 00] 2 (SetHL_BTN) Set Highlighted Button =(mov) 1024 (button 1)

[00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00] 4 NOP
[20 D4 00 0E 00 00 00 02] 5 if ( gprm(14) > 0 ) then { LinkPGCN PGC 2 }
[56 00 00 00 04 00 00 00] 6 (SetHL_BTN) Set Highlighted Button =(mov) 1024 (button 1)
[20 04 00 00 00 00 00 01] 7 LinkPGCN PGC 1
********** post commands:
[20 D4 00 0E 00 00 00 02] 1 if ( gprm(14) > 0 ) then { LinkPGCN PGC 2 }
[56 00 00 00 04 00 00 00] 2 (SetHL_BTN) Set Highlighted Button =(mov) 1024 (button 1)
[20 04 00 00 00 00 00 01] 3 LinkPGCN PGC 1
********** cell commands:
With these removed, the AR menu (and its intro) never play, so you're good to go.
Give that a shot, and tell me if that works for you (it seems to work for me). I also tried the chapter menu, which did work fine for me as well (I tried chapter 3, and it went to chapter 3).

Ok I think I have located a bad source. When I use my software DVD player and play the R1 retail Disc and select a scene it asks me for the AR. After I select the AR it does play the correct scene. If, during that scene I select the root menu, and then scene selection and that same scene, it gives me the wrong scene. All of that is done with the Disc in the DVD Player so I give up on this one.
Edit:
Didnt see your reply. I will try this when I get home and thanks so much for looking at it for me.

I'd love to learn how to do it but dont think I am ready for the advanced stuff. I have looked at yours and 2COOL's guides and they rock, but are way beyond what I can do. Of course as of a month ago I was keeping all those previews in the disney movies that my kids have so I HAVE learned something. I honestly barely know what half of the terms mean as far as DVD structure goes with the VTT_xxx and what not. To learn what I did I ripped a single layer basic disc and studied that. Thanks for all your help Jeanl.:)
Edit: Oh almost forgot to add that PGCEdit couldn't kick more ass if it tried.
The software is just fantastic.

That was a novel use of PgcEdit's Kill Playback function to bypass the AR menu :). It didnot work well for this movie though; probably work better if the ARM is in a PGC by itself. I am custom to the method by 2COOL, which worked for me every time :):). It is not easier, but it was a well-written tutorial. You can take a look here (http://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/third_party/2cool/remove_language_aspect_ratio_menus/remove_language_and_aspect_ratio_menus_intro.htm).
And if you are making backup for your kids, probably easiest to make a movie-only backup with DVD Shrink [Re-Author]. That way, it just starts the movie right away.
