Does anyone know of some freeware tools that can aid in the creation of animated gifs for websites?

You can use the GIMP to make animated gifs. Just create a multi-layered image and then save it as a gif. It then asks if you want to save it as an animated gif and you assign it some attributes.

I've previously used a nice little free program called AniTuner (http://www.gdgsoft.com/anituner/). It's very easy to use and works great.

Usually I use The Gimp, but for easy and fast creation of small little gifs try Microsoft Gif Animator. It's dated, but it's free and works good.

ffmpeg has a mode to output an animated gif instead of outputting to the screen. quality isn't so good, but it's fun to play with :)
