View Full Version : Do commercial authoring houses clean audio?

I recently picked up Return of the Pink Panther on DVD and was horrified by the audio quality. High pitched hiss and a horrible humming noise. The track was also mono but considering the time of recording will not question this. I extracted the audio and using some mid level audio cleaning tools, was able to get rid of the hiss, hum, and any pops in the sound. So this made me want to inquire in this group if anyone knows why when authoring a commercial DVD, that they wouldn't do some basic cleanup of the audio? Thanks.

I'm sure they do, I've never experienced anything like that on any DVD, no matter how obscure or potentially crappy.

Many DVDs of movies (and television series) from the 1940s have awful original unenhanced monaural soundtracks (The movies "Anastasia" and "Stagecoach", and the television series "Victory at Sea" come to mind). Other such DVDs contain both the original, godawful soundtrack plus a reasonably good stereo or .AC3 "cleaned-up" track...
