Damaged WMV file. cant repair - help?

have a WMV file that playes fine upto about 30 secs into the clip. then nada. cant jump past this point either

tried what i found in the guides to repair and convert to an avi

tmpegenc opens it fine, encodes to the damaged point then stops. 0% CPU usage after

tried avisynth. the avs is opened fine, but whenever the point of 'damage' is hit, vdubmod/mplayerc etc just closes itself

tried asftools and all the repair options i found. no joy at all

tried the old version of vdub that opened asf - just says - couldnt locate decompressor for format 'MP43' even tho ffdshow should play that format as it does when i play the clip in mpc.

any option i've missed to fix this or is it just a goner?

If it's that old, the file's probably survived several reinstalls, and xp no longer comes with those codecs. xD Installing the microsoft 6.4 codec pack should fix it, as would setting ffdshow-vfw to decode the formats. Virtualdub-MPEG2 has experimental asf support, partially derived from avery's original 1.3c code but more bugfixed, so maybe that could open your file.

i didnt create the file so never had those codecs, but FFD show plays the file fine so not sure why it cant use that to decode the clip

will give that one a go although the clip isnt really old - i just keep things like the old vdub ver that supported asf in case i ever needed it. :)

i didnt create the file so never had those codecsThat being the case, you might want to RE-read the forum rules FFD plays the file fine so not sure why it cant use that to decode the clipIf I remember correctly, the FFDShow filter provides the ability for playback only, not decoding...

ffdshow decodes as well - found out since dropping clips i've encoded in x264 in vdubmod opens fine with ffdshow (tells me in avi information section) so not sure why it doesnt work with this

You have to get the microsoft wmp 6.4 codecs. (The wmp9 codecs are why ffdshow can decode it in other players, but they don't do vfw.)

opened it in that other V of vdub and it opened it no hassle at all - but cant read past that same point that tmpegenc stopped at :(

looks like the clip is just goosed

That being the case, you might want to RE-read the forum rules
Maybe you need to re-read them yourself. Forum rule #6 prohibits discussion of illegally obtained material. The fact that he didn't create the file, doesn't mean it's illegal. As far as I'm concerned, his friend makes movies and gave him this file (legally).

I say use asfbin (http://www.radioactivepages.com/). It is suppose to be able to read past damaged points in an asf (eg wmv & wma) file and find the next good sample. Give it a try.

I read through the entire announcement, it only mentions downloaded files & DVD bootlegs. However, tomos didn't say he downloaded the file. He said nothing to assume his file was obtained illegally.

Apart from that, illegal material virtually never comes in proprietary formats like WMV. The only 'illegal' thing I can think of that comes in WMV is pay-per-view movies, but since tomos didn't mention problems with DRM, I can hardly believe that is the case.

I agree that how I think about the rules isn't relevant, but the rules just don't say that tomos is doing something illegal.

thanks. will try that in the future. gave up on that clip tho, deleted it now :(

and setarip_old, chill guy - never said it was downloaded. to be honest, its an old clip i found on a spare drive and i have no idea where it came from :) dont think it was downloaded since my net access was really poor until about a year ago

doesnt matter now since the clips deleted :( so let's all just take a chill pill and leave this be yeah?
