DVD regions

Just installed a new NEC DVD+/-r. It does not have a region selected. Is it necessary to select or may I just leave it be? I have not tried to record yet but it plays a DVD just fine.

I believe you'll find that your drive has now been set to the region of the DVD you played in it...

well I checked and it still says "Current region" "not selected" at this point I will try to burn a disk and see what happens. Does it matter or effect anything id no region is selected. Isn't there programs out there that make DVD' players region Free??? Im I concerned about something that I need not be?
