How do you know if you need to re-encode a DVD?

Hi!

I purchased DVD-Rebuilder a while ago together with CCE Basic. I haven't used it much but today I needed to backup a few retail DVDs and have one question.

I ripped the DVD using the old DVD decrypter version and got a folder of about 6700Mb. I started DVD-RB and chose the correct source-folder. DVD-RB shows that the DVD has several audio streamsand subtitles in language I do not need/want so I therefore unchecked those. The problem is that DVD-Rebuilder doesn't tell me how many megabytes I "saved" by removing those audio streams.

Is there a way to check this? The reason why I want DVD-RB to show is only because if the DVD (after removing extra audio etc) use <4,5Gb I won't need to reencode it, right? Or is DVD-RB "smart" in this way?

Another "option" is to use DVD Shrink to see the results of removing various pieces. Tell Shrink you want "No compression", start unchecking things, and watch the size bar (and number).

Another side benefit of this method is if you only need to compress the DVD, say 10%, I'll often use Shrink anyway. Nothing against DVD-RB. Even RB's author has suggested (implied ?) that Shrink does a good job up to 20%.

I know about DVD-Shrink and have tried that method you described before and it works perfectly. I just thought that maybe I was able to only use one application to satisfy my needs :)

You can.

As jptheripper mentions, all you have to do is just select the parts you don't want. If the removal of the audio tracks (for example) is enough to make it fit -- DVD Rebuilder will do all the analysis and the work for you. If no reencoding is needed, the entire process is measured in minutes.

I just can't seem to find where DVD-Rebuilder shows how much space I have removed (for each audio track etc) and where I can find the "total" amount my DVD will use (before encoding).

I can check and uncheckdifferent audio streams etc but the size always remains the same.

Do you understand what I'm trying to explain here? :)

I'm confused because I definetly had to wait for Nightmare Before Christmas to encode the movie even though it was under DVD-5 size. I am going to get another copy of it to try again.
