my computer keeps restarting while video capturing

my computer keeps restarting while video capturing . what can i do to fix this. my system is an amd- athlon xp 1800+, 256mb nvidia video card, 1G of memory, 80G of harddisk, winfast pvr, winfast tv capture card,directx 9c.
what is the best setting for capturing videos.
do i need to upgrade my computer to the amd 64.
what am i doing wrong.

What error do you receive when you restart it?

You may want to check your system for:

1) Overheating (If so, clean out the insides and don't overclock. While you're in there, also look for loose connections, improperly seated cards)

2) Bad RAM

3) Perish the thought - a virus...

it just restarts. no error messages.
i have antivir antivirus running.i aslo use spybot.

could it be the mother board. i had to replace my memory just about two months ago because it was doing the same thing.

I bet there's an IRQ conflict between capture card and something else. Yes I bet. No don't tell me winXP and its PnP handles IRQ conflicts fine, I'l be damned if it does ;)

tried testing the memory. its ok. tried virus scan. tried phycially cleaning my computer. and it still restarts while i am capturing in dvd mode. should i try to capture in divx. or is it better if i capture at uncompressed avi.

If you are running Windows XP, you should always receive a "Windows has recovered from a serious error" notification, and when you click Send error report you'll receive a browser with some sort of description of why it restarted. It's very likely a hardware issue though.

Turn off restart on kernel check (blue screen) so you can actually see it when it happens. For now, look under event viewer (eventvwr.msc) in application and system, and see what the failures are and get error codes you can check against microsoft's database in case it's a driver problem.

Worst case, you'll see a bunch of failures under disk and atapi, that means your ide (mobo) or hard drive is going.

That's true for plain vanilla XP, but service packs sorted the problem for me (but I also added more ram).

Still, can you check for IRQ conflicts?

Control Panel - System - hardware - device manager - view - resources by type - irq.

If your capture card shares an IRQ number with some other hardware (especially harddisk or video controllers. or network. or audio....) then this is asking for trouble.

I had a desktop that would sporadically reboot while encoding MP3. Turned out the heatsink was so full of dust bunnies it would over heat and shutdown, then reboot.

well this reboot looks more like a RAM problem becuz the full load cannot be handled by it. i had such problem for a lil time but vanished all by its own.
