View Full Version : SynthEditor Alpha2 - A Video Editor

I don't know if there's anyone interested on this but here it goes.
I'm making a video editor based on AviSynth.
This project is on its first steps but as many of you may know it's extremely hard to find bugs when you work alone that's why I'm posting the link to the second Alpha Release... please note... Alpha this means that it isn't even Beta :)
The objective is to make AviSynth available to everyone... keep it simple for newbies but powerful for advanced users - of course... at this point it is just simple :D
At this point the program is supposed to perform and write avs scripts with cuts on AVI and MPEG files... I'l add the encoding feature shortly but I really need to be sure that everything is working fine at this point and of course be free to suggest features.
This is the Second Alpha release with some bugs fixed from the first one that was distributed to some friends - don't worry guys... your names will be on the future documentation.
Here's the link:
http://dvd-rb.dvd2go.org/downloads/SynthEditor/VideoEditorA2.rar
Just UnRar it to any folder (don't use it on a drive root... it won't work :))
It should be pretty easy to use... I didn't wrote any documentation, yet... if you have any doubts just post them here.
Thank you all
ps. I'm a bad developer and I'm doing this on my free time so... be gentle :D
EDIT: I'm continuing here: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=108677

I get a "Data Execution Prevention" error (AMD64 + XP SP 2) when I run the program.
Looks good, if I disable it and start it up, though.

Works here (Athlon 2600+ XPSP2).
Bugs / comments:
- Clip lenght (in import window) should use HH:MM:SS:FF or h min s format (never seen "mn" used as a abbreviation for minutes ;) )
- creating several clips and then clicking on one of them in the "Selected Segments" part will not allow you to edit the original clip anymore (or is there a way to deselect a clip?)
- moving segments down/up in the list should also move the selection focus (so that you can move a segment up or down by clicking the up/down button several times)
Hope this all makes sense ;)
Thank you for the tool :)

@sh0dan
"Data Execution Prevention"?!?! as I said I'm a bad developer :D - do you have any clues for that to happen?
@communist
1st You are right... I guess that extra beer messed up my mind when I done that :)
2nd Look at the "Main Player" - the Button "Play" changes to "Resume", right? ;)
3nd Yes... you are right... I tried to make it that way but I just haven't found a way to do it :( - I'm still searching :)
Thanks for the feedback guys... and keep it comming...

@communist
On a second thought...
3rd Done... It was so simple to do it that I feel like a completly idiot... that is one of the situations that makes me wonder - "Why in the hell do we search for a solution using the most complicated ways and forget about the simple things in life?"
edit: forgot to mention... the fix will e on the next release, of course :)

When I saved a project file in the existing folder, all files contained in that folder (avs, avi, d2v etc.) have gone.:(

@niiyan
I'm sorry... you are right... I made it that way... the Project folder must be used only for SynthEditor Project files.
I'll add a warning to the action.
I hope you haven't lost important files... if you did, I really apologize but you must know that Testing is sometimes risky :o I hope you can forgive me.

Rockas,
Can you consider some team-work with Ebobtron,
who also developed new Avisynth editor filmcutter (beta)?

Yes... I can consider it :)
I did give a quick try on his application... but I found it a too complicated for a newbie then I realized that I didn't know any app (I'm not saying that there isn't one :)) that could make a fantastic tool like AviSynth available to everyone... then I started this one :)
I don't know if he is interested and I don't if it is possible 'cause I don't know what programming language he is using.

It has a nice look and feel to it. What's your programming language?

Rockas, well its a start, but i do wonder - did you ever saw how a 'true' nonlinear editor looks like? (you can start with something baseic like premiere-pro)

@tin3tin
Did you make it?... I know you edited your message... I'm asking this to know if you changed anything on your system to make it work.
It has a nice look and feel to it. What's your programming language?
I'm using VB6 - I could make it in VB.net but I know that some people dont like to install framework :)
Rockas, well its a start, but i do wonder - did you ever saw how a 'true' nonlinear editor looks like? (you can start with something baseic like premiere-pro)
And what do you mean by that?
Have you ever wonder why people develop new applications? if the obbjective is to make it equal to an existing one it will be better to do nothing :)
I'm making this 'cause I want to take advantage of avisynth's power in a simple way... and because I want to edit my home videos and I don't want my system loaded with whistles and bell I don't need... yeah! I don't like time lines :D ... I like numbers 'cause if I want to edit a movie at frame level I wish to know the frame number :)
I know this is on the first steps... On the future it will add video effects, transitions effects, multiple (two?) audio tracks, subtitles and I even wish to make it author DVDs with menus included (in about an year lol).
Now... what did you really had in mind smok3?
What features would you like to have?
Thank you guys.

:o I've realised I've uninstalled avisynth, so I had to reinstall it.
I'm still having troubles importing xvid and divx.
I like timelines :) - they appear quite logic after you once tried to work on a flatbed editing table.
If you're thinking of a DV edit pipeline - I would like to see a filmlook preset added to your editor aka deinterlacing and film-colorcorrection.

@tin3tin
Well... I guess I can add timelines in the future... now my main objective is to make it encode :)
Don't get me wrong... I didn't say I'm against it... just said I don't like them... I don't like soup either, but I'm not against people that eat it and sometimes I eat a little too :p
After "Encoding Feature" we will see about it... I guess I can came up with a "Whistle and Bells" mode :D
DV is one of my main goals... as I said I want to edit my home videos... so I'll do everything I can to make them better :) ... you'll be able to use all avisynth features... ok I can not support all of them from the GUI... but there's always space for a manual "script editor".
I'm still having troubles importing xvid and divx.
Can you explain what's happening? Error message?
thank you.

I think it's because of the ratio of my divx, xvid files... mpgs sized 720x576 works fine. I haven't any divx or xvid files in the right ratio...
BTW when importing a mpg succesfully - it plays a beep - know to me a an error/warning beep - even though the file is opened succesfully in the editor(which might disappear if more windows are opened). I think you should avoid this sound here ;)

@Rockas
Don't worry. The folder is for the test of AviSynth. It contained AviSynth functions which I made or I'm developing and source files relative to those functions.
So most of files aren't important and some important files have been backuped. Only 1 or 2 functions were completely lost from my computer, but still in my brain...;)
I'm looking forward to a new version.

First time I use your program, Spybot S&D (anti-spyware program) has catched an attemp to write in the registry an entry called "Global browser toolbar". After deny registry modification your program has run with no problems. ¿What is that registry entry?

thanks

rockas, not the features, i was talking about gui (like two equal screens you know.) and about workflow.
(actually i have some ideas on how the simple but efficient editor should look like, i you want them?)

Are you sure that came from my app?
I don't use the registry for nothing!?!?!?!?!
I Have Spybot too... never got that message... can anyone confirm this?
@tin3tin
can you make a sample "downloadable"... it should open the files even if they have "funny" frame sizes.
@niiyan
Glad to hear that... you scared me :)
@smok3
of course... I'll be glad to hear your suggestions... I keep an open mind for improvements :)

I have repeated several times launching your program and no registry changes has been attemped. Surely must be a sad coincidence. Sorry for that.

Using my laptop, I connected an external HD with different avi's on it to try in the SynthEditor. I ran several of the external HD avi's for a while then shut down SEditor and then my laptop.
I came back to the laptop later... disconnected the external HD then booted up the laptop. I open the SEditor then went to the Browse button in the top right of SEditor.
When I ticked the browse button an error came up...Runtime Error '68': Device Unavailable.:eek: (It could not find the External HD)
At first I didn't realize what the problem was until I went to the Syn ini. and saw the info. from the G:/ drive there.
So, I reconnected the external HD and SynthEditor starting working again.:D
The reason I am reporting this error is that there were only two methods that worked so the program would not crash when ticking the browse button. The first method to work was to reconnect the external HD and the second was to edit the Syn.ini. with the HD disconnected.
Regards,:)
edit: I am using 0.2 Alpha version

Divx and xvid works okay for me now.
Had a bad mpg file(0kb) which made syntheditor crash.
Looking forward to your joining files feature and the exporter options.

Had a bad mpg file(0kb) which made syntheditor crash.
Thanks for the info... I'll make sure that will never happen again :)
I'm taking this long to release the first Beta exactly to make sure those kind of annoying bugs won't be there... and I want to make sure that the Encoding will hit the chosen Target size.
I also found some more bugs related to saving and loading Projects... I think I won't be able to release a new Version today :(
