View Full Version : Mpeg2 capture format versus others (& looking for good video capture software)

Hello all. I have been video capturing now with my computer for years now. I have been using InterVideo WinDVR 3 ever since I started and it has served me mostly well. It has been quite good since they released an updated version with all the bugfixes.

However, there is one (possible) problem. The program has only a few options for what format/codec it can capture video into (Mpeg2). Until recently this has been just fine. I capture at maximum possible quality (9900 kps video bitrate and 384kps LPCM audio) and then transcode to something like xvid.

However, I have recently begun to wonder if there is another video format that would get me the most possible video quality for my captures. I have noticed that on VERY high motion scenes there is slight video noise. So my question is this, is there a better format or option for capturing video (and syncronis audio) in relatively losslessly quality? If there is, can anyone recommend a good program to do with it? (One that has a good recording scheduler for TV programs?). Thanks all.

VirtualVCR is an excellent piece of software (and freeware at that). It captures high quality .AVIs. Unfortunately, it does not include a scheduler...

I know, it was the first thing I looked at. I saw it in the stickies, but alas I really need that scheduler. I record 5 shows every single day on my media-server, and that recording schedule is essential.
