Does AutoGK use LAME 3.97b2 and the - V 2 switch? Also, does it use Azid's -s dplii swithc for Dolby Pro Logic downmixing on multichannel sources?

Yes
and the - V 2 switch?
Don't think so, should use --abr for ABR or -b for CBR switch

Yes it should, at least it is a request Len0x had agreed some time ago.
Don't have access to an encoding atm, this is from recalling.
Changes I have seen in the 3.97b2 is regarding the abr switch I use. I +suppose+ when you target 128, abr calculates the quality of the abr to match the quality you get with 128 cbr; so you end up with a +-96 to 112 stream depending on the source. If you want a +-128 bitrate you need to raise to 144 or more depending the source. I suppose a -v2 switch could behave more or less like that...
If you want to try it for yourself, the audio part will begin before the comptest (for a 2pass) It is a Dos style minimized window that you can grow. IT will give you all the infos that you need (version, switch used, times, birate evolution, kind of bitrate repartition etc...) but don't miss it because there is no log and when the audio encoding is finished it's gone.

Is there any reason for not supporting the optimized presets?

Please bear in mind that AGK is/was a "All in One" app and that Lenn0x always wanted very limited options to keep his app "newbie friendly" as much as possible.
We had some epic discussions :D about the audio options and usually his answers were constant: if you want more, do it outside AGK. This is what I do when I want:
- MAx quality VBR mp3 stereo or
- AC3 multichannels ( dynamically compressed) with lower bitrate than 448 or 384 kb/ps
I just take the demuxed stream (AC3 or mp2), use Belight (Hi Kurtnoise :) ) and remux with VDMod in directstreamcopy mode.
