Not having OSX I can't say for sure. But under Linux there is a Firefox/Mozilla plugin for Mplayer. If safari supports mozilla/netscape style plugins then someone somewhere has probably got a new enough version of Mplayer and its plugin compiled for OSX. The trick is to find and install it. Another option if you have any say or so would be using the VLC plugin.

Safari use quicktime to play and Quicktime is just a name of the whole
video/audio side in mac land. Quicktime is made up of many codecs.
some by apple most by third parties.

Apples own will work fine for most x264 unless the encoder uses a very
high profile setting. In that case you would want to use VLC or mplayer
or one of the x264 codecs from third parties.

What i did is have Safari pass the stream to VLC so then VLC launches
and plays in its own window while i can then continue to surf in Safari
in the original window. I like this better than it playing in a Safari
window anyway because of that.

Just select what helper app you want to play x264.
