Saw a post here somewhere quite recently where someone knowledgable flagged Convolution3D as old and newer things as more useful, but I've lost the link (was looking forward to responses).
Over at http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?p=1470920#1470920 some bloke did a (limited information, no images) comparison of several filters, including RemoveGrain, Vaguedenoiser, Deen, Edeen, Degrainmedian, Descratch, fft3dfilter and Convolution3D and in his opinion Convolution3D still "cut it" for the source clip he had and the job he wanted done. Must admit, C3d and Pixie seem to do an acceptable "most of the job most of the time" for simple captures I have, with advances like MCNR_simple2 and LimitedSharpenFaster and SeeSaw adding value doing happy things to simple but noisy clips.
From a newbies perspective, is there already a link showing some simplistic before/after image comparisons eg (a) minor noise (b) moderate noise (c) heavy noise such as poor VHS capture, and then alongside a sample of the effect of each of various filters with "optimal settings" on each ? Guess such would have clips which don't need other types of filtering. Would such a thing help newbies select amongst potential denoisers more easily ?
If reasonable and if it'd help - if someone had (smallish) clips and scripts, I'd be happy to try'n run'm over a couple of weeks... bearing in mind I only have 10Mb ISP web space and can only do simple web pages. Dunno about linking such a thing with something like http://www.avisynth.org/mediawiki/wiki/User:Clouded/Rough_Classification ... maybe Clouded's already got that in hand.
