is it legal to use a p2p to download old 20 years old movie?
there are plenty of movies I can not find anymore(ex:wargames, 2001 space odysee..., and some french black/white movies).

how long the copyright is valid?

archive.org has your free legal movie downloads. Granted many of them are turn of last century or near it. but there is all sorts of good stuff. 3 Stooges, Popeye, Betty Boop, Merry Melodies, and lots of other stuff you probably never heard of.

70 years after the death of the author it expires.. or till Disney passes the next extension, whichever comes first.
And when it comes to works done by multiple authors, the dying date of the last one to live is what counts. So basicly a movie could be copyrighted as long as 140 years after its release. (some 20-year-old sound mixer or artist who lives long and happy live and dies at 90)

A relevant example: Leni Riefenstahl did her most notable movies in the thirties but died at the age of 99 in 2003 so the copyright expires in 2073.
