h264 playback problem

Hi I didn't find any apropriate thread but in case there was one just redirect me.
I'm trying to reencode a video in h264 using Sharktooth's codec, Virtual Dub 1.5.10 tried it with single and two pass method and everything seems fine and dandy until I try to play it back. When I play it back using mediaplayer classic it seems to lag periodicaly about every 20 seconds. I have Xvid, Lazy Man's mkv, as mentioned above the Sharktooth's, Directshow Ogg Vorbis Filter, Direct Vob Sub and WMV 9 codecs installed and I don't have any other codecs/codec packs on my PC. I don't think CPU power could be a problem either cause I'm sitting under a powerplant :D (3 GHz dual processors and an ASUS ATI Radeon 9550 128MB). The compression bitrate is about 2000.What's frustrating is that I also tried playing back h264 mkv-s coded by someone else and those were played back easily.

Anyone can give me some advice about what am I doing wrong?

Weird, from what you are saying you have installed you should not be able to play h264. I personaly recommned CoreAVC ( http://81.98.148.105/Uploaded_Files/Doom9_Forum_files/CoreAVC_DSDec.zip).
Of course,since your CPU seems ok, I don't think that's the problem, but more likely because from what I understand you have that h264 in avi (which can cause different problems).

AVC in Avi its buggy as hell
Use Staxrip or Megui for your rips now, and use the mp4 !!

usual problems of AVC, VFW and AVI.
Use MeGUI or Staxrip or RealAnime 4... do not use VirtualDub or any software based on it (including GKnot).

Thanks guys, I'll try these and hope that I don't screw up anything(which is quite unlikely :) ).

PS: I forgot to mention that I (want to)make .mkv extended video files. Does that change any of your advices you gave me earlier?
