With the "added automatic detection and extraction of segments that don't need reencoding", is there a message or log that would indicate which segments will be treated as such?
Is that why there is a "Force Reencoding" under Mode menu is for to override this automatic detection? So in a sense it's similar in previous versions - all segments are re-encoded. What happens when there's no filters and you enable this option?
How does "Force No Reencoding" in Segment viewer work? Won't enabling it result in oversize because Prepare has been performed? Or this option will force to do a re-prepare to reallocate the bitrates accordingly?

When you blank out segments, it doesn't need to run the prepare phase again to allocate the additional gained space back to the main movie. So I would imagine that the same holds true for taking space away.
Would be interesting to hear how it does it though. Does it then take the lost space away from all segments (main movie and extras?) or just the main movie.

Here are some facts:
1. If the main feature doesn't require reencoding you will see this message at the end of the PREPARE phase:
" -- FEATURE video will not require reencoding."
2. All segments are checked individually. If the output prediction size will be equal to or greater than the input size (of the VIDEO portion only), the segment will stay intact. This is true for extras as well as the main feature. But some actions like "steal space from extras" or "Half-D1/Half Bitrate" reallocate bits from the extras to the feature -- making it more likely that the feature will be kept intact.
3. If you are converting to Half-D1 or doing a 16:9 conversion -- the encoding will be done anyhow (because encoding has to take place in order for one of these to occur).
4. The "Force Encoding" option simply disables the check -- it is there mainly for folks who want you use filters on the source -- if you don't reencode, the filters would have no effect because they were never used.
5. "Force Encoding" won't cause an oversize. If you encode the output is going to be resized to match what was decided during PREPARE.
6. Undersizing is possible, however. If you decide, for example, to reduce extras by 50%, but 25% would have been enough to make the disc fit -- the extra bits can't be allocated to a segment that is not going to be reencoded.
