I was trying to encode a short 47 second clip that I ripped from a DVD to use as an encoding test (so i don't waste 10 hours to find out something is wrong)

I used the X264 codec linked from the Doom9 x264 guide (http://www.doom9.org/gknot-main6.htm)
i also setup-ed Gordian Knot and x264 settings as per the guide.

after the first pass, i recieved the errors as shown in the two attachments.

The error only appears if I use the x264 codec. it doesn't matter if I use the AVI ot MKV container.

On the other hand, I have no problem using Xvid codec.

Also, I notive in the log in Gordian Knot, there was an error (for both x264 and Xvid) saying that there is a difference of about 200 frames between reported and actual frames. would this create a problem?

Hmm, not very clear what it may be from the errors. I can suggest the following though:
1.in case you had an older version of x264 the new one can cause problems so unninstall x264 and install again
2.Sharktooth's build 0.408 has some problems (and that version is old, since he's in hospital atm), and besides, it is recommended for maximum compatibility to get the latest builds from www.x264.nl (Sharktooth's builds have some patches included that can cause problems)
3.VirtualDub(mod) is not recommended for encoding with x264, the VFW in x264 is not updated since a long time, take a look in mpeg4 AVC and mpeg4 AVC encoder GUIs forums for more info (I recommend megui as encoder, or StaxRip if you are more of a beginner)
Good luck.

thanks for your halp, Daodan. it works now :D
I uninstalled Sharktooth's build and installed the one from your link.

As per your suggestion, i took a look at megui. it seems wuite complicated, so i gave up
and for StarRip, i tried to use it to encode Xvid files before I start using Gordian Knot, and was very unsuccessful (that's why i start using GK).

Strange, to me going from Gknot to megui seemed very easy, maybe what you find complicated are the settings for the encoder, but for those Sharktooth made some profiles, so you can choose one af those (HQ-Slow is usually a good choice to begin with). As for avs creation, use the ones that you generate in Gknot if you find it easier, use megui only for the encoding part.
p.s. make sure that if you use Gknot to use mkv as output not avi.
