View Full Version : A good reason for Rule #6

I was just perusing the postings at another forum. I was surprised to see postings of .PSL files (used in conjunction with DVD Decrypter to deal with "ARccOS"-copy protected DVDs) specifically identified as being for use with RENTAL versions of particular DVDs.

I believe that allowing such postings (there were several, so I doubt that it's simply a matter of that forum's moderators not yet having "caught" them) is an open invitation to MPAA, Macrovision, SONY, etal to "come down" on that forum for being complicit in apparently illegal activities.

I'm sure none of us here would want to be the cause of such an event at the Doom9 forum...

I would say that is a very good reason for RULE #6.

I agree that it would be a violation here at Doom9, But what is your point? I lurk at some forums, not all have the same rules. Laws regarding fair use are not the same all over the world. Do not jump to conclusions

@spuddog

Hi!But what is your point?

My point is, as I said, I believe that allowing such postings (there were several, so I doubt that it's simply a matter of that forum's moderators not yet having "caught" them) is an open invitation to MPAA, Macrovision, SONY, etal to "come down" on that forum for being complicit in apparently illegal activities.

It's certainly a fair point that rule #6 should be applied consistently. IMO it isn't, and is sometimes unfairly applied (e.g. a moderator being a bit too itchy because of moral reasons rather than legal ones).

I don't understand how discussing someone's legal rights to back-up dvd's under fair use laws is illegal. When groups such as MPAA, Macrovision, etal. can stifle such discussion, It won't be long till we won't have any rights at all.

LOL. Power to the people, Take It to The Street, Etc.

ok dude
"rental version"
how is that fair use?
unless you bought the used disk

there's always the option of reporting a post to a moderator, is there not? and if there are no mods in that particular forum, it goes to the next higher instance.

As a counterpoint, I use ripping entirely as a late fee avoidance mechanism... I occasionally realize the night before they're due that I haven't watched and there's no time to. So I rip, watch, and toss later on.

I never bother to encode or anything, I mean, I only rent stuff I'd only want to watch once anyway. xD The places with the good movies all cost too much.

sorry but the fact is such posts are not allowed here and in the past when someone has done such a post its been stopped as soon as a mod sees or is informed of it. so it really doesnt mean anything what some other forum does or does not do.

ok i know you are trying to say why rule 6 is good etc and i agree with you for such a case. however i am also guessing you are reacting to that other post about a thread that was closed even though it was about a legal downloaded video, where it was closed and the person complained that it shouldnt fall fowl of rule 6 as such. these are 2 different things, 1 being illegal most places and 1 being legal.

however i think the fact that Wilbert already closed that other thread and made a statement to stop discussing and where to complain if you had any problems that should really be the end of it. starting another thread to say how much you agree with a rule is just as pointless as starting one saying how you dont like it.

for anyone who missed what Wilbert said its here

I still have not received any notification about any possibly problematic threads.. I don't have time to wade through forums I don't frequent and at first glance I can't spot the threads setarip is speaking of.

From what I can make of it, setarip_old is saying there isn't any of that stuff around here (forum.doom9.org) but there is on other forums he frequents (forum.crazyillegalddvcopyingsite.org.co.uk.net). Thus, Rule #6 is great and we should all love it.

I wonder if forum poisoning is possible. Some of these bigger organizations have deep enough pockets they could hire companies to systematical poison forums; for the purpose of prosecuting the owners to stifle innovation.

Besides being unethical, would it be legal?

@dragongodzhowever i am also guessing you are reacting to that other post about a thread that was closed even though it was about a legal downloaded video Not at all. I started this thread solely, as I said, because of the postings I saw at another forum...

@Mr_OdwinFrom what I can make of it, setarip_old is saying there isn't any of that stuff around here (forum.doom9.org) but there is on other forumsEXACTLY... (BTW, I'm not familiar with the forum you named)

@Doom9there's always the option of reporting a post to a moderator, is there not?Of course there is - but apparently no members of that forum have chosen to do so, which is a further indication that both members and the forum administrators deem such postings to be acceptable.

Regardless, the point I'm trying to make is that such postings at a forum, if left unchecked, could conceivably lead to grief for that forum, from the likes of the MPAA, Macrovision, SONY, etc.

What you're doing to me is extremely frustrating.. you dangle a rotten carrot just outside my reach and ask me to throw it away.. but I can't reach it.. this whole thread is pointless.. if you think something is improper, get in touch with the people that can do something about it.. on this board the people that can get things done all have the doom9 team member badge.

@Doom9

He's not saying there are problems here at Doom9 that need addressing! In fact, he's saying just the opposite!

oh, now I get it. Well.. it's all good then. Even though, technically it's legal to rip such a rental disc.. as long as you delete all files the moment you return the disc.

@Doom9

Doom9, which the love would say if it didn't exist?
One knows that you do very good work, but show of humility and a great wisdom.
This gesture and this glance are not for you.

Avoid these subjects and consider other conduct or solutions to solve certain incomprehensions.

You have the character but also the heart (you proved it last year).

My respects.

you can see how it looks though starting this thread right after the one i gave the link to was closed. ;)

I am a mod at another forum and can say that we vigilantly pursue our equivalent of rule 6.

Of course, some forums have stricter interpretations than others but speaking now solely as a doom9 member, I am glad R6 is as strict as it is.

No complaints from me. To the person who wondered about
forum "poisoning" , I'd say that it has happened in the past
and will happen again.

Just for a subtle refresher on how capitalism works, read an annual
report from any of the large marketing firms in the U.S. and grep
for any itemization of "underground marketing campaigns".

Millions of dollars are spent annually in the U.S. to shill products
under the guise of trustworthy personas in internet forums.
This is easy information to verify, the SEC requires accounting
disclosure for public companies.

With the relative anonymity of the internet, and the standards
of entrapment techically only applying to law enforcement, there
is no deterant to the motivated & unethical from
dropping land mines on web sites.

Just look at the recent wikipedia pollution by congressional staffers
if you still have any doubts that this actually happens.

I like to be able to come to Doom9 and get update status on several
digital videos projects without having to troll them individually on
sites like sourceforge, but I would imagine there are multiple
interests that do not enjoy the doom9 content like I do, and
would be quite happy to see this site "go away" ...

It would be great to be able to discuss anything, anywhere, but
in the current state of affairs rule #6 is really the only sane
precaution.

Everyone losing a resource like doom9 because a few people
do not realize there are more appropriate venues for discussion
of 'warezy' activity would be a travesty.
