My CD and DVD players have made some interesting noises over the years; everything from chittering to a nearly inaudible high pitched whine. It sounds more like the drive mechanism than anything else, your hiss that is. The optical reader usually makes the chirping and whining noises.

I was reading your post again and thought I'd add; if its more of a whistle right on the edge of the human hearing, its associated with the optical reader. However, if it's more of a hiss, lacking tone or harmonics, it is more likely the drive mechanism.
