Why is divx clip bigger than mpeg clip?

Hi!

I tried to convert a mpeg movie clip to divx (avi). I expected the resulting divx file smaller than the mpeg file, BUT it's much bigger. Can anybody explain that fact to me? Are there some special settings I've to make?

The video bitrate you set for DivX must be lower than the original bitrate for the file to be smaller, and you must make sure you compress the audio too. Most likely you have not compressed the audio, which will cost you approx 10MB per minute instead of ~1MB/min.

allright, that sounds also logically to a newbi like me.

I used the tool MediaInfo to find out the data of the source video. The bitrate is 1090 Kbps at 30 fps (which is the framerate?).
I tried to adjust the bitrate for the divx codec. In the settings I found a Bitrate calculator who told me the bitrate is 794 kbps. Because that's smaller than the bitrate of the source I changed nothing in the settings of the divx codec.
For the audio compression I took MP3 with 4 kb/s.

The new resulting avi file is much more bigger than the avi file of my first approach, where I used Direct stream copy for audio and the same settings for divx.

What went wrong??

i got same problem(and the pain to calculate and finish at 500meg or overshooting 1.5 gig) until i used the free version of fairuse wizzad, and it s right spot on 700meg, stereo., and hassel free!


i am a total newbie too!
