How to make menu default play on startup ?

Hi all,

I have several older DVD's that start/default to movie play, upon insert, even though they do have menus. (you can access the menu via remote)

I'd like to make backups that default to displaying the menu first. Is there an easy way to do this? If so, can someone post a step by step. Thanks

Use the Jump To PGC Upon DVD Insert function in PgcEdit. It's easy.

Everything can be done with IfoEdit! But you have to do it manually. And going to the main menu instead of the movie when the DVD starts is really not easy. You have to take care of tons of potential problems. Using just a simple Jump to the menu works sometimes, but could bypass some important registry initialization, needed later in the DVD, for example to have the right audio and subpics, or to allow the "return to main movie" buttons to work as expected. The method used by PgcEdit (derived from 2COOL and Jeanl's methods) is easy to implement, and takes care of the problems for you!

You think it's easier with IfoEdit? You have to work several hours to do it! With PgcEdit, you need just one minute or two!

PgcEdit makes this almost trivially easy to do, or at least it feels that way after doing it a couple of times.

I usually jump right-in to the movie playback (not the menu) but these days when many (most?) DVDs have endless warnings, trailers, and ads in front of the menus, this is reason enough to want to back-up a DVD and put the original away!

rOIZ....Ok, I finally got around to trying this w/the PGCEdit guide you linked and it worked just fine. It does take a bit of time the first go round and to trace through all the movie's program chapter/cells. Thanks again !

The Jump To PGC Upon DVD Insert function in PgcEdit is certainly the recommended solution and will get you good result every time. That said, the 20-step method using a debugging process can no way be termed trivial. There is a learning curve, but PgcEdit is the hot tool in town and you will benefit in the long run. :)

However, for the original question, older DVDs often had very simple one TitleSet structure; and a short-cut approach might work just as well in most cases. Bear in mind the possible adverse effects pointed out by rolZ, you can give this simple method a try [I do ;)]:


Open the DVD in PgcEdit
Select VMG - First Play PGC
In the command list, double-click on the Jump command
In the Command Builder, select: Jump And Call -> From FP-PGC -> to VTSM Menu -> JumpSS-VTSM
Enter the main movie TitleSet number [say VTS 1].
The created command will be: (JumpSS) Jump to VTSM 1, Root menu (TTN 1) . Click OK to apply.
Save the DVD


Play it in your PC to verify result. If there is problem, restore backup with PgcEdit and try the long method. :D
