View Full Version : How or why to force progressive?

I am relatively new to the video encoding scene... I love the ease of use of AutoGK, but I have a question... I have been encoding Aqua Teen Hunger Force (a cartoon)... Episodes from the same season are being reported as progressive and interlaced. The ones that are reported in the log as progressive, appear to have better quality. I was really hoping someone could tell me what the difference is, and if you have any control over it? Thanks!

Aqua Teen Hunger Force (along with many other animated DVDs) are hybrid, and AutoGK chooses based on the sample area. You have no control over it with AutoGK - the better ones are probably IVTC'd.

What is IVTC'd? Just to clarify, there is no way to change this setting? I read something about changing the threshold for determining whether or not a source is seen as interlaced or progressive, but it advised to not mess with the setting. I just want to get steady encodes for the same show, are there any other options?

What is IVTC'd?IVTC = Inverse Telecine -- it reverses a process called Telecine -- a mechanical process where 16mm or 35mm film at 24fps is converted to NTSC video at 29.97fps.
When you IVTC such content, you end up with the original frames at just about the same speed -- 23.976fps rather than 24fps.
For more info, you can click on www.doom9.org/ivtc-tut.htm -- the software discussed there is out of date as there are newer releases, but the concepts will be helpful.

So what of the option to force normal IVTC in AGK? Would that produce an output that was encoded as progressive?

Instead of waiting for 3 days to see if someone would answer your question which was ambiguous to start with anyway, couldn't you have tried it out on your own? Read up on the IVTC tutorial and you'd know that you can only IVTC something which is "IVTC'able".
